Slide board training for cardio

An ice hockey buddy of mine does an hour of slide board training each day - the first exercise in the video below:

He doesn't do much else in the way of lung work, save for hitting the ice 4-5 times a week, and he's got cardio for days (killer thighs too). Anyone here tried this? Due to my troubled hips I'm always looking for different, low impact ways to beast my heart and lungs.

Looks like a lot of fun. At my last gym I used to do a lot of high intensity interval training that was mostly low impact using gym exercises with mats, box, TRX, dumbells, med ball, swiss ball - 10 exercise, 60 seconds work 15 seconds rest, 3 sets, 2 minutes between sets. I haven't done one for a while, it would probably kill me. Today I did a 5km row on the ergo, pretty good cardio warmup for my lifting session

    That looks like fun!

ross enamait has some similar workouts with furniture glide pads,

    see his blog post here

if you want a cheaper option this might be somthing to look at than buying the whole board?

    video demo.

    Ross is totallyhot :p

I occasionally incorporate some of those rollouts and the cross using the TRX suspension trainer. Possibly the toughest of the ones I've tried. Suspended crunches, combination pushups and bodyweight rows are easy by comparison

so hes doing an hour of cardio a day in addition to sports specific conditioning 5 times a week and you wonder why he has killer cardio

an hour a day of cardio is an hour a day of cardio, the actual machine or exercise you do is immaterial, its the effect on the bodies energy systems thats the important thing, since the slide board allows for constant HR monitoring and a consistant cardio output as well as being leg dominant (not to mention sports sepecific for him) its a great tool for building cardio and leg endurance, as is running, as is cycling as is all cardio, the key is to do it not HOW you do it

Always had one of these in my clinic for the last 20 years although the specific machine and brand has varied. Great exercise as you can vary the resistance and you can lower your stance into a deeper squat to get even more of a burn.... I know that cardio is non-specific but functionally this has been a far better exercise for overall leg training that bikes or steppers or whatever..

When I wrestled we all used to fail on the bike tests but we could wrestle almost continuously for an hour or two. Makes you wonder whether the testing methods truly reflect cardio fitness. Fitness is to a degree activity specific IMO.

Great point! I get really annoyed at people who think that the only fit people on the planet are those who run marathons!

good point all conditioning programmes should go from the general to the specific, and even when you have the correct energy system training down other factors such as specific muscular endurance etc come into play
