Jumping rope and iffy knees

A few years ago, I hurt my knee doing Shotokan (joint felt like it separated, but an MRI showed that miraculously nothing tore). After some physical therapy and a lot of taiji, the joint's got most of its strength and flexibility back, though it still doesn't like extended jogging and the like.

I'm really trying to find a good cardio workout that doesn't involve going to the gym or a pool (the best time for me to work out is after my wife and kid are asleep, or before they wake up), and I was thinking about good old jumping rope. Somehow, it seems like it would be easier on the knees than running, even though it's technically still an impact exercise. Does anyone here have experience with this? How easy or hard is jumping rope on the knees?

Why don't you try it and see if your knees hurt? If they don't then you can be reasonably sure that your knees are fine.
