I live in the Dallas, Texas area. I have been a member of the Association for Renaissance Martial Arts (ARMA) for four years and I helped establish and run the ARMA DFW Study Group. My primary area of study is Liechtenauer (German) longsword but I also study dagger, cut & thrust, sword & shield, and spear. I also do limited study of Fiore and Vadi.

Hey, I live in Holland. I haven't practiced any western MA sofar, but I'm going to check out a western MA organisation. They give weapon training in all sorts of western arms like the two handed sword and long sword (even maces, i think).
Eventually, I may also check out LARP events. These are live action AD&D sessions with noobs, fantasy geeks and so on. In LARP, u are only allowed to wield fake western weapons, but it 'll be fun to use my training in AD&D anyway!

    Hi all
    Im new to the Forum

My name is Stuart I stay in Lanarkshire Scotland. I train in Nanbudo and have done for 18 years. Nanbudo as far as i am aware is the only martial art where the founder is still alive and teaching. Nanbudo was foiunded in the late 70s by Yoshinao Nanbu a well respected Japanese Fighter and who is now considered one of the greatest of his time. Nanbudo evolved from traditional karate and Sankukai however incorporates sweeps, takedowns. throws etc.

Anyway nice to see such a good forum

A interesting place to start might be the Dutch manuscript "Clear Instructions to the Excellent Art of Wrestling" written by Nicolaes Petter in 1674 which can be found in the Vol. 2000 archives of the Journal of WMA:

Here's an illustration of Petter's 'wing chun' straight punch while trapping the foot!!

    Good Luck!

    Hi Luoie, Hi all,
My name is Pat O'Malley, done some Cudgle and Pugelism when I was a boy, not because I wanted to, but because my GrandFather fro Ireland insisted  .
When I got older I could not find anywhere to train once I realised it was something that had a lot going for it  so branched into the Filipino Martial Arts :) which has many similarities and stayed there. Now I am studying how similar this unique Eastern MA is to our very own Western MA and loving it. :woo:

At the young age of 42 (Nearly 43 but still feeling 27, the age of my wife ;) ) and still fighting full contact. :p

Age is all in the mind or so they tell me, but the bruises take longer to heal  .

    All the best

    Pat

    Hi Pat!

Do you remember much of your early cudgel training? That is a topic of research of mine for quite sometime now.

Remember mostly the pain given out by the old boy but yeah, some parts still ring a bell now and then, The guard was more open than in FMA and their were less angles (some more some less, but generally most FMA styles have 12,), the footwork was very similar as far as I can remember.

Some bits are blurry, but others OK. He started bashing me when I was around 5 or 6, I moved from Goven to London when I was 7 and did not go back untill I was 11, then moved back to London at 14 so at times it was a bit hit and miss. I can remember him having a go at me for going into what he described as the "B*****D grip (obviously that word is banned)", he kept saying only cowards use that, then he would give me a Thwack.

Very cool Pat thanks! Do you happen to remember what the b*****d grip was? I hope you don't mind me picking your brain...just so rare to find someone who actually had an old style passed down to them even if they only remember a bit

    Yeah it hurt!

It was similar to what I would call the closed guard, held close to the body covering the chest area, like hiding behind the weapon. The reason is say it hurt is that every time I dropped into that guard I got a whack on the head from the old boy. But the funny thing is now I specialise in the FMA I use it quite a lot, but in a different way that has more effect as a defence.

    Hope this helps
