Thought I'd give the forum a kick and generate some discussion. So koryu which include tessen? It seems to be a popular weapon in a number of "modern" systems too but I thought it would make a good thread to discuss its "roots". Anyone got any good clips of good tessen usage? I liked this: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcfvGoYV44s "]Yagyu Shingan ryu katchu heiho yoroi kumi uchi - YouTube[/ame]
We use the tesen in Shinto Muso Ryu - in conjunction with jutte in the subsumed ikkaku ryu kata so you could look for footage of that. I recently handled a lovely edo period menbarigata tessen owned by someone from the Masaki Ryu but I dont know if they actually have tessen kata or it was just something he had acquired out of interest.
Dean, The technical repertoire in tessenjutsu vary from ryuha to ryuha. Some ryuha use the weapon against empty handed attacks, some against swordsmen (Think of kodachi kata against a swordsman using a bludgeoning weapon, rather than a cutting weapon). Some ryuha do both. Training is always paired and never solo. The weapon is used for parries and blocks as well as a force multiplier for strikes, joint locks and chokes. The weapon is never used open, since most Japanese tessen have wooden ribs, while the outer ribs are iron. Other designs have the weapon with all ribs made of iron or as a solid length of iron carved into the shape of a fan. Koryu that have or use tessen in their curricula; Takenouchi-ryu Katayama-ryu koshi no mawari (Uses some in it's jujutsu techniques) Kiraku-ryu (Uses the weapon mainly against a swordsman) Ikkaku-ryu (It's not really tessenjutsu, since the main weapon is the jutte, but some kata use the weapon in conjunction with the tessen.) Araki-ryu (Some lines still have it in their syllabi - The weapon is used against both empty handed and sword attacks) Hoten-ryu Kukishin-ryu Shibukawa-ryu Kurama Yoshin-ryu Yagyu Shinkage-ryu (Before someone jumps on me for that, there are lines in Kyushu that have it as well as in Kanto.) Yagyu Shingan-ryu Kashima Shin-ryu [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGPn-Wz1aFo"]Kiraku-ryu tessenjutsu[/ame] Watch the pair in the background of the embu, those are some of the techniques from Kiraku-ryu's tessenjutsu. Steve what about the first part of this video, real Im assuming.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=EyQXT7KrblQ
Hey John, You're just stirring things up, yeah? Frank Dux's group? Very legit..... (PS I'm the guy working with Bob in Melbourne. I'm sure he'd say hi if he was on the forums, he certainly has some great stories about you, Scott, and everyone else back there!)
Hi Chris, Hope Bob is keeping up his training. I aint stirring up nothing about old Franky boy, Bloodsport was a great film :hat:
Why don't you just spar with it like they do in Kendo or as the Dogbrothers do? Keep it as safe as you can of course, but push it within that limit... Really no point thinking what would or would not work... No matter what the weapon.
Think you might need to read about the topic of this subforum. The discussion might make a bit more sense to you then.

What did I do, I simply don't know much about this art, I'm just innocently trying to find out about what is legit and what is not!
Well, John, you certainly broadened my understanding of the breadth of systems out there.... Seriously, though, what was up with that Reiho for the sword aspect? Yoko Chiburi before the kata?!? And were they just copying a form of Katori Shinto Ryu Reishiki, but trying to "beef" it up? Sigh, what some people are passing off, I don't know....
And I'm the pope! Actually........ I'll bring a tessen too to the Heijoshin and show you personally if you like. The fan is usually never opened like you see in those abominable clips.
As the fan has no combative application or personal requirement (i.e. no sun) in the UK, I am going to invent seitei-brolly.
