After wishing for ages that I'd start, I had my first game yesterday (and I created my character the week before). Playing once a week every week after MMA
By any chance is yoru charcter a expert at unarmed combat? Also enver played D&D, i have played a Firefly based RP game once vias team speak and now and then play a warhammer 40K one.
Nah, Druid! Roles for background. Pretty random but funny. I've got Warhammer figurines but I don't play. Gonna sell them.
Find some nerds and make money and them happy at the same time. I was never into it, but someone I know. He loved it as teenager, but said it got ridiculous expensive. EDIT: And, of course, enjoy your D&D time, you nerd
Good for you! It can be a very fun pastime! I usually favor a Fighter or Ranger type I played a lot in my teens and 20s and then didn't for a long time. Have recently got back into it (1st edition) a few years back. Still lots of fun! I have never found a computer game that is as good as the 'real' thing (D&D).
I gave up my weekly D&D game to get in more Muay Thai... but I hope to go back at some point. Been playing D&D off & on for ~25 years...
1st edition is very very different than the recent renditions. I played 1st edition when I was very young (9-12 years old maybe?) There is no split between race/class--there were just a few characters. E.g., fighter, mage, elf, rogue, dwarf, and maybe something else. I don't really remember... I recall 2nd edition expanded on this a TON and is much more recognizable as similar to the more recent versions.
I think it compares favorably. I played a little 5e and found it pretty close in terms of rules and pretty easy to adapt to. I recall 3e and 4e being more 'complicated'. From what I've looked at from 5e, I think it would be easy to "translate" characters and adventures from 1e to 5e and back. 1e was always fun because there was a very open 'add what you will' notion and we plugged in things from Dragon magazine, made up stuff, changed stuff and kept it real flexible. My opinion of 5e is that it is very flexible, with most of the stuff we wanted already built in or easy to modify. I like the books that are coming out in support of it as well as the pre-painted minis I think you're thinking of the old 'Dungeons and Dragons' with the color sets... red was 'basic' (levels 1-3), blue was 'expert' (levels 4-8 or something) and so on with a very rigid class/race set up. I am playing 1e (AKA Advanced Dungeons and Dragons) which does allow for various races to play various classes and so on. 2nd edition sort of reset it and brought a lot of house rules and options into a more compact set (1e was broad, ranging from the original hard bound Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide, with Monster Manual and Deities and Demigods, later fleshed out with Monster Manual 2, Fiend Folio, and Unearthed Arcana and supplemented by Dragon magazine articles, realm boxed sets, and so on).
Ah, yeah the original Dungeons and Dragons is what I refer to as first edition. AD&D is what I refer to generally as 2nd edition, though now that you remind me I do recall there was AD&D and later 2nd edition. AD&D with the two hardbacks is what I played a ton of in my preteen years (10-13 or so). Only briefly played the original D&D.
Only experience I have of DnD is playing games on my PC (Baldur's Gate and the like). Would love to try my hand at some point. How do you normally go about getting started?
Join a forum and get started. That's what I did. Got my first group going. We have a D&D WhatsApp group now ^^
There are a variety of options for pen & paper roleplaying: - Online (e.g., forums/IRC). I know there are, e.g., vampire the masquerade games that run online via IRC & forums (Whitewolf) - Online organized, local meetups (e.g., We are what we do | Meetup has groups for roleplaying/D&D in my area; I found the group I've been playing D&D with for ~11 years where I live now via a meetup they advertised). - Gaming stores--if you have a store that sells complicated board games and pen & paper RPGs, often they will have adverts for groups looking for members/groups running campaigns you can join, etc - Co-workers (I work in software, a lot of my co-workers play pen & paper RPGs and advertise sometimes looking for group members) Probably a bunch of others I'm not thinking of.
I belive i have stumbled across the geek part of the Martial arts community as well. It is a pest to get some of the physical games set up, its just finding people to play and a suitable location and the the ability to have evryone stay intrested or be able to play it consitently until its finished. The last part isnt that easy using the internet. XP Must say its easy to forget about them especially if you dont check on them, the woes of discord servers. What edition is D&D up to now days anyway? Its always been that thing i have never played but heard of.
The latest is 5th If I recall, they have the very basic core rules available as a free download Start playing | Dungeons & Dragons
