    ok this is random but my friend and i were arguing so i thought one of you people might no the answer!!!!!

    does the water REALLY swirl the otherway in australia to the UK wen it goes down through the plug?

    Yes, it's called the coriolis effect.

    No idea about hurricanes, I've never studied those. I know that the spin of water in different directions is caused by the rotation of the earth (I presume due to the water further from the equator having a marginally smaller angular momentum than that nearer the equator, but I really can't be sure!)

    Hmm, I was under the impression that for small holes and large fairly still bodies of water you could in fact observe this effect, but I may well be wrong.
