So I have a friend who is in MMA at the moment hes in BJJ and Muay Thai. Anyways I take kito ryu jiu jitsu, hes always saying the BJJ is so much better. I was just wondering if anyone actually knows the difference or not?

See if you can take a class or two at his school and find out for yourself. Just a suggestion. :)

They're very different. Kito Ryu has minimal groundfighting, BJJ is 90% groundfighting. While BJJ has a proven track record, Kito Ryu is one of the 3 arts (along with Tenjin Shin'yo Ryu and Fusen Ryu) that gave us Judo. So it has a nice rep as well. It's kind of like comparing Boxing and Wrestling IMO - deal with much different things, comparing them is a bit irrelevant. That said, BJJ guys can point to modern champions of the art who do well against other arts, and I haven't heard of Kito Ryu producing similar exponents. Maybe you'll be one of the first? :D

The arts compliment each other well.

That would be awesome if I was one of the first, maybe my Kito ryu classes are different than most we do all grappling. Hmm thats really odd. I didn't actually expect them to be different really I figured that they had a few different techniques as do we. I also think that it's not really the style that make the person, it's the person that makes the style. A style is only as good as it's user, it's techniques are only as good as the user can execute them? I may be wrong. Thanks for the replies so far :D. I'm looking forward to more info :D

Hi mystik, welcome to MAP. Always nice to have another jitsuka on board. here are some threads where we've discussed your question:

Since he's your friend, you should go along and watch/join a few classes and even invite him to your dojo. You can then observe and get a feel for what you prefer.

Dare I suggest a combination of both is best. The advantage of JJJ in trying to stay on your feet and deal with attacker's and the BJJ for those times when you are taken to the ground.

Each system will have its advantages and disadvantages. It will come down to what suits you best. Try cross training to develop skills in both styles.

I would most definatley cross train in both styles but there isn't a BJJ school around me and also I don't have to much time and my other style tae kwan do takes up time aswell. I'd like to train in BJJ but dont have one around here

    Kito-ryu?

Are we talking about the same Kito-ryu that Kano used to create Kodokan Judo?

Is it being taught in the USA?
