hey guys, I had my first ever taekwondo lesson two days ago, and i'll share my experience with you guys first of all when i went in, I said to the sensei teaching there that I was a brown belt in karate. seeing everyone turning to look at me even the black belts (couple of them) who were there seemed...um...like saying that 'whoah' if you know what i mean lol. After sensei finished talking to me, the whole team gathered round me and gave me a warm welcome Luckily it was the first lesson of this year after the summer holiday so i must've been quite lucky . First of all, the warm up exercises are mainly focused towards the legs. Jogging on the spot which seems like longer than 10 minutes is no fun. Then we started to do some basic block punch and kick techniques. Since our karate stance is usually in fighting or forward stance, their stance is quite different called the 'walking stance' where both legs are straight whilst one leg in front of the other by just a bit. Quite difficult for me to stay in the stance as i frequently turn back into fighting stance. I must say, that fighting stance is by far better. Then we did some leg kicking exercise continuously towards are opponent and they have to evade it. Then we did pattern 1 which is like saying heian shodan. quite simple. then we all sat down and watched the black belts do their kata......have to say, not as good as our ones, for bunkais or focusing on techniques. At the end, we all got cake as it was someone's birthday, and it is a rule: when it's your birthday, you must bring cake lol! All in all, I prefer karate as my main martial arts more than taekwondo. But I do think that their technique and training for kicks is certainly a one to follow. Hopefully i will attend to the lessons in the future!! yuen.
That's ok, I tried judo and kenpo and found it wasn't for me either. Whatever floats your boat. btw do tkd have senseis? what are they called (i know its korean so what do they call their teachers)? I know they don't have kyus either. Gups, or something? Someone correct me.....?
Fortunately I have him treed, just waiting for him to fall. It might be a long wait so I'll have to be patient. All my friends are sticking around for the show. They know it's going to be a long one, so they brought food.
