Has anyone here trained with one, because I never have. I am under the impression it is pretty rare to train with either of them. Also, a question about technique. If you were right handed, would you swing the chain with your left and hold the kama/kyoketsu with your right or vice versa?

The kyoketsu shoge is one of the smaller weapons Hatsumi sensei was emphasizing year before last.

    Yep.

We did quite a bit of work on that at the Manchester 2003 Taikai

Argh!!!!! Left hand vs right hand. NO!!!!!!!! learn to swing it with your right hand and then swap to your left. Beware the one handed ninja! Sorry, I thought it was kind of obvious to learn both hands.

And yes, we have had many a lesson devoted to the Kyoketsu shoge. My favorite excercise is making a gauntlet of death (that's what we called it). Get twenty people in two rows swinging the ring (training version obviously). The idea is to run in between the two lines as your fellow buyu try to take out your legs (or head) with good Kyoketsu swing the ring technique.
