so jesse just posted an article with a bunch of quotes, mainly from the old okinawan masters. this one in particular stood out to me:
Surely karate is open to the public and available for criticism? It's not taught in secrecy or hidden away. Most karate clubs are more than happy for any publicity they can get!
It is now, it wasn't then. Furthermore much of what is open now is not the same karate that was taught behind closed doors then.
This is my favourite quote personally. Most of them are really interesting quotes, but this one stands out to me the most.
Sure, I know that. I thought Fishy was saying that quote stood out because it still applies, which is why I was questioning it.
@moosey: the vast majority of the sensei i've seen IRL are most definitely not that open to criticism or actual technical debate from other karateka, let alone people from other styles, much less actually changing karate based on it (which is the real reason why one'd want critiques, unless it's to fabricate refutations to validate what one does, which is silly). i blame imperialist japan and their dumb focus on what is "traditional".
Nahhh. This is- “It is necessary to drink alcohol and pursue other fun human activities. The art (Karate) of someone who is too serious has no flavor.” – Choki Motobu
Clearly you were blinded by the awesomeness of Moosey My other brother-in-law died. He was a karate expert, then joined the army. The first time he saluted, he killed himself. - Henny Youngman Silly, I know
no no, you're all wrong. clearly he used his tai chi to redirect moosey's quote back at him, and is now deflecting all criticism with his incredible chi power.
