My School is like this from highest to lowest: 10th Degree Black belt (only one in the US and one in Okinawa) 9th Degree so on and so forth you get the picture Brown 3rd degree Brown 2nd degree Brown 1st degree Purple Blue Green Orange Yellow White It usually takes about 4 years to get to 1st dan in my school. I don't really like that fact totally because a lot of the newer belts have gone to the commercialized training and they don't know anything about self defense.

Quite a few associations have them. In fact, my last two had red belts. I believe some American associations have them after black (smells a bit like BS to me, but some clubs seem to state it) I've always found the blue belt to be the alien belt...
My Kyokushin school goes white, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown, brown, brown, black. It's a very small class, most of the time it's just me training with two sandans and a nidan, so even though I've been a mere yellow belt for over a year now (mostly because we need to travel to Maryland to test) I've been getting a lot of great training.
I was a yellow (which is 7th kyu in my school) for about a year when I restarted karate, also because I kept missing gradings due to having to travel and not being around. But, like you, my class is small and we have great black belts so no harm done.
Yeah, definitely no complaints here. Two of my instructors got their black belts under Shihan John Farrell, who was a personal student of Mas Oyama and trained in Japan with him for quite a while. My other instructor received his black belt from Shihan Bobby Lowe, who was Mas Oyama's first uchi-deshi. To say that the instruction is awesome is an understatement.
