I've seen some impressive kata demonstrations right on YouTube. I must say, these are on another level, much better than myself.

    Here is one,

Yep, this has made my mind up, I was thinking of moving over to Karate from ITF Tae Kwon-do (I am 1st degree BB) and the only thing that was stopping me was the patterns in TKD always seemed to look better, guess the sign wave helped, but this kata looks very very good and I will be crossing over, is this a form of Shotokan? excuse my knowledge on Karate please, I will get there and I am looking forward to start in the coming weeks.

I think that's a ****o kata. It's form is somewhat different from the shotokan kanku dai kata.

So, you would leave your school to train in a system that "looks better" in terms of kata?

GaryWado, I have already left my school, what sort of question is that? No not just kata, I have looked at many aspects. That just topped it off.

But what has swayed it - is how pretty it looks?

How was I to know you already left your school?

Not "how PRETTY it looks" I guess it is because I have done TKD for 16 years and been used to the patterns in TKD and finding it difficult to grasp the Karate kata aspect.
It has been a build up of many things and TBH the hitler thread made me find this girl doing the karate kata and it impressed me, no not the prettyness but the execution of the moves and the passion shown, It has just made my mind up that was probably already there anyway.

Speaking my mind - It's pretty, but a hair's breadth away from what these guys do...

Isn't it odd what people like...I started with TKD but always thought Karate kata looked better (more combative in nature certainly).
Sharper, crisper, more intent, less robotic and metronome in timing, less 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 etc.
The sine wave looks AWFUL IMHO.

On the whole, I hate WKF competition kata with a passion. They genuinely make my skin crawl. But that was OK actually.

I stand by my viewpoint that WKF kumite matches are a bad joke though.

Oh good lord, what did I watch?!

But yeah, WKF competition kata and this are so close in nature...

I think Asai Sensei was the second Shotokan Karateka I ever really liked - the first (for me) being his student Andre Bertel Sensei mind...
