Thursday night I was sparring a BB and when I did a back kick he did a spinning hook kick the other direction. He landed it in my temple area when I came around (I had a helmet on...no biggie). His heel slid and hit the bridge of my nose; I now have a speckled/broken blood vessel type bruise.

I didn't count that one though :D . Tonight, I was sparring the same BB and got punched in the face (he didn't think I'd come in...I did). He actually knocked my contact right out of my eye :D :p ! I told him that was impressive...he should incorporate it more often...blind your opponent and then deck them :D .

My husband is jealous...wonders why he can't hit me too  :p LOL LOL(my husband has got to be one of the least violent people on the planet...so it was hilarious coming from him)!!

Well, just thought I'd share my exciting news ;) . I'll be wearing it proudly this Memorial Day weekend. You're the only people who would understand the thrill :D .

    Enjoy your weekend all!

Hehe, nothin' like it... Personally, I'm not missing having my eyes blackened, but I do show off some of my more spectacular bruises after a good sparring session. My sister got grossed out by a really huge hematoma on my shin that had dribbled down into my ankle, creating another bruise where I hadn't even been hit, and called me a masochist . Grossing out family members is priceless.

Well Kelly, it was a learning experience. As much as I try to avoid revisiting the experience I still get a shot in the face once in a while. The fact that you were able to shrug it off is a testament to the ladies in MA! Sorry it is a lesson you had to learn, ;)

I'm impressed at your composure, some people would be upset. :D

Sounds like that BB maybe needs to work on his control a bit. 1st Dan? Newly promoted? I ask because a lot of red belts have trouble with control, and consequently new BB's do too!

I was pleased with my first black eye so I know how you feel nothing like a good beating. :)

A broken pinky toe, bruised rib, too many bruises to name, and my newest addition is a bloody nose from sparring Thursday night. The latter is from a 1st Dan getting geared up for our tournament this weekend. It all just keeps me coming back for more and enjoying every minute of it I might add.

Congrats on getting your first shiners. Now try not to let the same thing happen to you again. The two sparring sessions I learnt most from were when I got my face bloodied up by a red tag (yellow belt at the time) and when I was sent flying across our hall by a black tag. Its good that you don't see frazzeled. There are a lot of practioners both male and female who after recieving was you recieved may have even quit!

P.S I agree with kwang gee if you really want some more shiners spar lots of red belts (No offence intended to red belts :D )

Your very first shiner. That's cute  It almost makes me want to go back to when I was a "shiner-virgin" and relive the situation... (And no, I'm not being ironic here!)

My second "shiner" though, I'll never want to relive, as it was a front kick straight to the family jewels. I sat down hard, caught my breath, fought back the tears and crawled over to my bag, where I got my VISA-card. Then I semi-crawled to the dojang shop and croaked: "One groin protector, please!" :D

Yeah, he's a first dan. He's been in TKD for a few years but is just now back (it's been about 10 months) after a 2 year break. He doesn't compete and isn't able to come to every class due to college and work.

He and I get along very well and he apologized. We were both laughing once he knew that he hadn't poked my eyeball out :p . I told him I couldn't believe he just hit me and he said neither could he! :D . It was all very "sportsmanship" like.

I don't think I could be upset unless it was obviously intentional OR if someone after repeat warnings continues to be careless and lack control out of laziness.

Considering my instructor has been telling me for two weeks now to stop blocking with both my hands downward (I have no idea why I do this...it's a horrid reflex I need to get away from)...to keep my "guard up" or I'm going to get hit in the face one of these days...I really did deserve it  .

AND the fact that I was kicked in the head the night before which resulted in bruising SHOULD have solidified what my instructor was telling me. I guess I'm just a slow learner...gotta learn the hard way :D .

I will NOT let it happen again as far as I'm able (and I think my "able" is getting better all the time :p ).

Keep in mind also that this sparring session took place after an hour and a half of an intense competition class. It becomes very difficult to maintain control after a heavy work-out (which is why our instructor has us spar then).

    Tittan, you're hilarious :D :D :D !!

Congrats Kelly, next time I hope that you will be informing us about a shiner that you gave to your sparring partner.

My first "shiner" that I got was on a tournament. My oponent landed a very solid axe kick right into my face. :D

Oh yes, the days of bruised legs...I loved showing off my bruises. I got a little too beat up one day though, got kicked in the mouth, had my jaw dislocated, and bit off a chunk of my tongue. I was wearing a mouth piece too-I cant imagine how much of my tongue would have been gone without it. Ick!
Did you know tongues regenerate?!? They do! Just without the taste buds

Trying my best Kelly, trying my best...

I'll add another weird story from my life as a taekwondo player:

I was a red belt, and assistant instructor in my school. My friend was a 3rd degree black belt and the instructor. He was going to show some entries to chokes, and got a bit eager. Of course, I was the dummy... He entered the choke perfectly - and I mean perfectly -almost crushing my windpipe, and then he started talking about how to hold the choke correctly. I got less and less air, couldn't breathe at all, and tried to tap out - first on myself, then on the arm he had around my neck, but he didn't notice... Could you believe he was to busy flirting with one of the girls in class? When he finally let go, I was unable to speak for several hours, and it hurt to swallow for the next couple of days...

The result? He married the student, and I really learned how long I can stay in a perfect choke without passing out :D

Yay! a hit! I always go on about my kick in the face to the point where it bores people! its a bit of a shock if you never have been hit before. It reminded me of when boy's use to kick the football at my face on purpose back at school oww.

I was kicked down and pushed kicked down onto the floor but I got up and laughed even if my elbow hurt. Just laugh at it, untill you learn something sneaky and use it MWWWHAHAHAHA.
