Thought this was worth a laugh! :D And perhaps some serious discussion by those who are practitioners of western style sword arts. :)

I'm informed by a reliable source that UK Police officers are massively constrained in what they are allowed (legally) to do with their baton. Apparently smacking people in the head or arms is a no-no. Their main target is allegedlely the legs.

Doesn't look like it from Slips picture :D

An unreliable source - who may or may not be one of my relatives ;) Has told me before how because of the constraints on use of the baton he and his colleagues preferred to use a maglight in many cases as there was less paperwork. He may have also used a skillet in a fight with a drunken yachtsman in one incident, where the knife wielding drunk was trying to escape justice and thought he had the copper trapped in the galley of his boat.

koyo Passed away, but always remembered. RIP.

I have taught a number of police officers and have good friends are are still police. In the UK "the police have to fight with their hands tied" the rules are utterly ridiculous.

However one of my friends who shall remain name less took the skip of his hat across the eyes of a knifeman to great effect. Their training in weapons and takedowns is minimal and they are NOT encouraged to train elswhere. Sorry state of affairs.

    regards koyo

    The Police Cutlass!

In the 'good old days' the police used to do some cutlass training before going on the beat - bringing a whole new meaning to a 'clip on the ear'

my father was a member of the polis till his retirement.
He tells a tale of being threatened publicly (in court buildings) with being killed by a larkhall 'crime lord' ned and his ned family. Included in the death threat were his family (ie me mum and me). Next time father had to deal with the resisting arrest, thieving pikey ... he fractured the ned's skull and split his (old fashioned) heavy wooden baton. Not a word was said as ned was hospitalized and later locked up for 6 months. Ned and family decided not to threaten my father again.
Oh how the general public must yearn for the days of such effective community policing.

In the Met Police, if you whip out your ASP then you have to fill in a form.

    I kid you not.

In all fairness, if you read Mr. Flemming's oft pilloried quote should be taken in context. In his book, "007, James Bond" is having his .25 ACP replaced with the .380 ACP. In 100% fairness, when compared to the .25 a .380 DOES hit "like a brick through a plate glass window."

    Peace favor your sword,

hah! no they are not, they love smacking people over the head during demonstrations. I have never seen a copper aim purposeley for the legs when they could crack someone over the head.

Perhaps you should note the brick being thrown point blank at the police officer to encourage the response (as I saw once in a rangers celtic riot that I got caught up in).
If your assertion is correct that they 'love' smacking innocent peaceful demonstrators about the head ... perhaps you can explain why more police officers are injured in riots that demonstrators.
Perhaps you shouldn't go to so many violent demonstrations where the police are required to draw their batons, cs gas, water cannon, dogs and mounted officers ... just to keep the violent neds (be they football scum, hypocritical anarchists or drunken neds) at bay from wrecking innocent peoples possessions.

Actually to be fair Slips two pics show good technique on the part of the officers....look at the defensive hands ...kept up to protect the officers heads ..

Is it just me or has everyone completely overlooked that the officer looks like he is defending himself rather than attacking in the first pic.

Hitting them in the head is a big nono, the arm is discouraged because knowing the policemans luck it will bruise badly or break and he will get pumped for it.

Just so everyone is clear on this... I'm not taking a jab at the cops in the pictures. I'm all for it when police show up to control the average idiots that make up a good 50% of demonstrators these days. When demonstrators show up with hoodies drawn and gas masks on and plenty of object to chuck at officers and then proceed to burn and smash innocent businesses... then they get what they deserve... and usually they deserve a whole lot more than they get.

The minute you pull your hoodie up and grab a brick or a bottle at a demonstration... you're more than fair game for a beating.

Ned is the west coast scottish word for chav but they existed long before the chav was thought of (stands for Non Educated Delinquent). The chav at least loves his car, the ned cant afford a car as he spends all his benefit on fags and booze. The east coast word is schemie (as they always live in a council housing scheme).

Slip the pics have been circulated over here before...

What I will point out is the officers involved have been attacked ...

they are not in full public order kit ....no helmets no protective shin guards, arm guards etc.

They are part of a team depolyed to mingle with the crowd and gauge the crowds mood during events ..

I think they found the answer in this case

Still good pics of the dangers involved in policing a march !!!

    Smurf,
Yeah no doubt. It's obvious that the first pic the officer is the one defending and not the one attacking. The dress of the protester in that picture is consistent with the sort of person that shows up at protests only to get his adrenalin fix. Often it's this sort of idiot that really hasn't got any sort of political agenda beyond throwing rocks and warring with the police. I have absolutely no sympathy for them... they do more harm to political protests than good... often sparking enough trouble to force the police to clamp down and end the protest all together. Negating the whole purpose of a protest and often with people injured on both sides to no real meaningful end.

Not just West coast, it's use is quite spread across the central belt, though from about Stirling up you hear the term 'mink' more.

The thing about 'Non Educated Delinquent' was BS made up by the Scottish Socialist Party (Rosie Kane was the first person I ever heard to say this) in an attempt to reappropriate the term.

Slip, totally in agreement mate. Any idiot who turns up to a 'peaceful prostest' wearing a hoody and a scarf should be automatically targeted for a beating.
