Hello all... I had an idea...i thought that this post could by specifically for famous martial art masters' quotes and what exactly they mean...i guess i have been influenced from watching BBC Series: Mind, Body and Kick Ass Moves when Chris cleverly said: 'I asked my master why is it that some arts are dying...why wont masters pass down everything to their students...my master told me the story about the cat and the tiger...the cat taught the tiger how to fight...then the tiger turned on the cat...the cat then ran up a tree...and that is something the cat never taught the tiger! I like that quote i dont know about you guys...but anyway...do you guys have any famous martial art master quotes that we can relate and inspire us in our training? maybe some bruce lee ones for example? Just an idea... Thank you... Mac

War is a respite from training. Leonidus leader of the 300 spartans. Watch out for the movie. regards koyo
another from mind, body and kickass moves. "how can i be unbeatable?" "the sparrow never lands where the tiger roams."
"it takes 10 years to be able to use tai chi." "but what if i train everyday, really, really hard?!" "then it takes 20 years."
"If the arm attacks you, destroy the arm" "Repetition is the mother of skill" - Kevin "The Jedi" Brewerton. (no idea if he came up with it, but he used to say it often enough!) some nice ones here: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art32435.asp
From the Duke of Wellington, you can't get more martial than that. I don't know what effect these men will have upon the enemy, but, by God, they frighten me. All the business of war, and indeed all the business of life, is to endeavor to find out what you don't know by what you do; that's what I called 'guessing what was at the other side of the hill.' Up, Guards, and at 'em. The only thing I am afraid of is fear. It is very true that I have said that I considered Napoleon's presence in the field equal to forty thousand men in the balance. This is a very loose way of talking; but the idea is a very different one from that of his presence at a battle being equal to a reinforcement of forty thousand men. I never saw so many shocking bad hats in my life. - Of the British Parliament. My rule always was to do the business of the day in the day. Hard pounding, gentlemen. Let's see who pounds the longest. Wise people learn when they can; fools learn when they must. We always have been, we are, and I hope that we always shall be detested in France. As Lord Chesterfield said of the generals of his day, 'I only hope that when the enemy reads the list of their names, he trembles as I do.'" Another Side to the Iron Duke The Duke once met a little boy, crying by the road. "Come now, that's no way for a young gentleman to behave. What's the matter?" he asked. "I have to go away to school tomorrow," sobbed the child, "and I'm worried about my pet toad. There's no-one else to care for it and I shan't know how it is." Keen to ease the little chap's discomfort, the Duke promised to attend to the matter personally. After the boy had been at school for just over a week, he received a note: "Field Marshall the Duke of Wellington presents his compliments to Master ---- and has the pleasure to inform him that his toad is well."
Ok back on topic. "Don't think, do!" - Hatsumi Sensei May not be famous but it bloody well should be!
My father's been telling me that for 24 years I like the one in someone's sig. here on MAP. From memory so not word for word: "the moment you stop respecting a weapon is when it reminds you of why you fear it"
