Decided to jump back in after my last loss, entered another no gi competition (Empire Grappling Events Ltd | Home) They have a category between Beginner white Belt and Intermediate blue belt, which is Novice white, so I've entered that one! There should be a minimum of two bouts this time, more mat time! It's in Manchester, on the 28th of April, so a bit of time still to prep, and I'll update this if anything interesting happens between now and then.
Empire is normally really well run, lots of MMA up there, so good wrestling to go with the BJJ, Kind of on topic, this is a great match from a few years ago there.
I have thought of entering this comp. My training needs to catch up though, I'm very behind on where I want to be right now. So maybe mid/late summer.
Well, it's tomorrow! Head is shaved into customary competition mohawk, the nerves are hitting a little, but music and writing next months training plan is helping with that. My teammate who was supposed to be entering hasn't made weight, which is a shame, but I've tried 3 scales today, and been under the top limit on all of them! Hopefully will get video footage, as a few of the guys are supposed to be coming to support. Catch you on the otherside!
Rapid update, the few guys are now the no guys!! Anybody wants to turn up and film, I'll pay your entry Kidding aside, I'm hoping it shouldn't have an effect on my performance, it's nice to have someone in your metaphorical corner, but at the end of the day it's down to me
Thanks all! Lost my first match in 17 seconds to a guillotine *Shakes Head*. Second match was better, I was dominating more or less from the beginning, got on top and worked my transitions, which is what I always try and work on. I attempted some submissions, just to try, but the guy defended well. I ended up losing to a straight ankle lock, combined with an accidental kick in the groin. The ref did call time, but I said that they'd happened simultaneously. and he would have got the lock without it, so he won. I'm still happy with how I did, I learnt a lot, and my pride hurts less than my pride and joy @Dead_pool yes, there were also gi categories. I arrived in time to watch quite a lot, very entertaining!
Yeah, I think it will certainly have helped my confidence. Pre the sub I was actually applying my game plan and in the zone, which I haven't managed before. Onwards and upwards!
What caused you to land in the guillotine and what stopped your defence/escape? Likewise for the ankle lock. Don't necessarily have to say here but worth investigating for yourself!
Guillotine- Poor takedown attempt, stuck my neck out, and the guy was straight on it (Just seen the results, he took silver). I did attempt to defend, but failed. Posibly panic combined with a very tight choke. Ankle lock- Probably picking my feet up (I think it's called technical mount?). I do it to bait movement, so I can transition or attempt a sub, but I clearly made it too obvious, did it too often. Not sure what stopped my defence. If the opponents coach took video footage I'm going to try and get hold of it, and I'll post it here!
