Hello. This thread is intended as a resource for people to find out the truth about the many defamatory anti-Catholic rumours and myths that circulate and crop up on other threads. I have aimed to address the main points that get raised fairly often. Rather than commenting, I'll let the articles speak for themselves.

Just out of curiosity will you be covering any of the Catholic churches long running campaign of covering up repeated and systematic sexual abuse of young students and children by it's priests and clergy?

Seriously... this is one issue the Catholic church has failed to effectively address time and time again. In fact it's actively worked to protect paedophiles and sexual predators time and time again. It's a well know... well documented fact.

It's one of the main reasons that the Catholic church catches flak... well aside from doctrinal issues.

I suspect that many of the articles that you've posted regarding the Spanish Inquisiton and the Catholic Church don't actually wash very well with most historians. I'll give them a read but my gut feeling from the get go is that they're not going to be up to any sort of academic standard in terms of historical accuracy.

When the vast majority of your sources are from the catholic league and catholic.com I'm inclined to agree with slip that your hardly quoting respected unbiased sources. That doesn't mean their arguments are all bad though it would take a detailed look to sort the wheat from the chaff ;). However couldn't anyone just do this themselves by going to catholic.com or the catholic league and just doing searches? I mean I can see what your goal is but it's the same as me listing a load of articles from an evolution-creation website. No-one is likely to read them unless it's relevant to a specific topic and even then if they want a good perspective it's worth looking into who is respected in the area and what they say rather than just relying on apologetics websites.

There is no excuse for abuse. Ever.
The Church, from Pope John Paul II down, has now acknowledged and apologised for the abuse and has said it is putting procedures into place to combat and prevent it in future. The Church is not full of perfect people. Hopefully by acknowledging the abuse and truly repenting of it, the Church as a whole and individual members can hold themselves accountable and reform, and fully support the survivors.

Isn't referencing the Catholic League on the Inquisition a bit like inquiring about the Armenian Genocide with Turkey? Is there really Anti-Catholicism running rampant on MAP? Guess I had not noticed.

Catholicism, like any organized religion, has a multitude of good qualities. It has a very long history and consequently has had a propensity to have to have been used to justify some pretty shady or downright oppressive incidents down throughout history. The church has also been a force to help the poor in many areas out in the field too.

I think the whole stance of a bunch of supposedly celibate men decreeing that birth control is not good for the masses in these modern times has got to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Unfortunately, many aspects of the desert based faiths still stubbornly cling to beliefs that aren't practical in the modern world. The heirarchical system of the Vatican doesn't exactly lend itself to being terribly in step with the times either.

The whole pedophile thing referenced by Slip is an indicator that the church operates a lot like a business. It has tried to mitigate risk and cut losses whenever possible just like any large corporation.

If it works for you, that's great.

Yeah well it's taken them a pretty long time to even admit there was a problem. Long before acknowledging the problem they were busy shuffling pervert priests off to other parishes when they knew exactly what the deal wash.

So now we're supposed feel all warm and fuzzy because the church is supposedly instituting new measures of self policing.

    PFFFTTTT!!!!

I think you've raised an interesting point here and one that is quite apparent on this thread - namely that people have an emotional grievance against the Catholic Church per se. This is why one can be having a discussion about (say) abortion and someone will snap - "yeah, well, what about Galileo?" or whatever, as if that somehow has any bearing at all on the issue being discussed, which of course it doesn't, or shouldn't.

They need to allow priests to get laid then they wont be raping the children think about it. They go on for like 20-40 years without getting laid who knows what that does to their brains and clearly its nothing good if they end up raping kids cuz their so horny since they never get laid.

Frankly that's just a gross misunderstanding of paedophiles. The don't need to get layed... they've been bagging kids for a large number of years... pretty much at will.

Gee... I wonder why that could be?

The issue being discussed is grievances against the Catholic church. So far that's all anyone that's posted in this thread has referred to.

Posting up a bunch of link by pro Catholic websites doesn't really do much to dispel any of the myths you've cited.

    To summarise:
    Papal Infallibility

The pope isn't perfect/infallible, he can make mistakes. Just any pronouncement on scripture is infallible as he has a direct line to God.
So, if a pope murders babies and rapes quire boys, he's only human. When he says that abortion is murder, and homosexuality is a sin - he is speaking the truth of god.

    Oh, that's totally ok then.

    Galileo

We didn't lock him up cos we are anti-science, we locked him up because we disagreed with what he said.
His theory was heresy - so clearly punishable by house arrest.

    Oh, fair enough.

    Crusades

It's very complicated... blah blah blah, sidestep, move the goal posts, what? Religion being a cause of a holy war? NEVER!

So clearly not their fault then.

    Inquisition

Oh, they only tortured a few people: Other people did MUCH worse!!

How foolish of us to think that torture and intimidation is a bad thing. Clearly we should use the appalling things other people did as our moral compass..

Ignoring all that, how about the blantant sexism and homophobia in the Catholic Doctrines?
Or the fact that they are still failing to promote safe sex in AIDS ridden countries (that'll be due to an infallible papal decree about contraception) or you know the very basic point that they claim to have special privaledged knowledge about the existence and nature of god, when they quite clearly don't.

I HATE this section of MAP. :woo:
