I want to try out judo, but I can't join a class ATM, so would the Canon of Judo help me find out the basics grips, throws, etc? I don't expect to learn it very good from the book, but at least this way when I do get a chance to join a judo class I won't be as confused (I train in no-gi grappling stuff right now, so gi's will mess me up).
My advice would be to keep training what you already know and wait for a Judo class to teach you what you don't. If you can adapt what you already know to grabbing hold of someone wearing a gi, great! Otherwise either train with a partner and see how grabbing a gi varies techniques you already know or wait until you find a class. Best bet would be to avoid trying to teach yourself the techniques of Judo, as some of them can have subtleties not immediately apparent in books.
