The Ali vs Foreman fight, the rope-a-dope tactic Ali used was one of the best seen in boxing, a great example of how a great boxer uses tactics and skill to win against a slugger, a big slugger! like Formby.

Its just great how quick it all happens, for the whole round Foreman is just trying to pummel Ali, Who isnt throwing any punches, then bam hes on his ass then walking back beaten to his corner! Foreman looked out on his feet after throwing so many punches, and Ali had great skill to smother them.

Any other gems of tactics you guys can think of??

Hooking while your opponent while spinning off the line. Just like what Mayweather handed Hatton in that last bout. It's a basic boxing move... but combined with a good set up, speed and pinch of power... it's a KO shot.

    PS.
Foreman was a monster in his day. One hard hitting cat. His skull must be at least twice as thick as other humans... he always had his guard down around his waste. He just waded through most people jab. It was crazy. On top of that he had an uppercut that was an uppercuts uppercut! It's like a frikken rocket to the moon. You DO NOT want to ever get caught by something like that. The Foreman VS Ken Norton bout that the commentator mentions in this fight is also up on YouTube... I watched it last night. Foreman KO's Norton with that uppercut - let's not forget Norton was the cat that broke Ali's jaw!!

    Here goes the complete fight:

Thats what makes what Ali did even more special, to do the rope-a-dope with the hardest puncher at the time was a brave move! and he pulled it off.

Yeh the off line hook thing that Floyd did was perfection!

Slip the jab ( ;) :D ) and hooking at the same time is a good skill to perfect.

That was a sweet move! Do you remember what he called it in the interview. he spoke about where he picked it up too. something about detroit maybe. Maybe not that common, maybe.

Anyway I remeber thinking very 'soft' like strategy/principle (i'd love to say taiji but I wont) that exists in all art. Taiji being an example of a predominantly counter attacking style.. Anyway great counter attack. he sucked him into emptiness from which he vanished, abd blam with the hook.

Best thing I've seen in boxing for a while. Mind you i havn't watch that much t5his year.

    regards

One guy I never get tired of watching... ever...
is the incomparable Sugar Ray Robinson.

    175 wins
    19 losses
95 fights before taking his first loss

Who else comes even close?!?!

You could learn a lot from watching his fights. Jeez it's a long time back. Back then it was mostly black and Italian fighters.

Didn't Ali say that Sugar Ray Robinson was the best boxer of all time?

    Its just crazy isnt it!?!

    175 wins!!

the number of fights is incredible!

I find it amazing how back in the day, the old school fighters seemed to have been super human, hard as nails! the way they boxed so many rounds back then too, not just 12 rounds like today. And some of them really did just stand toe to toe and box the crap out of eachother for round after round!

Yeah when you consider that Ali fought Norton... Norton caught Ali with a straight right in the jaw... breaking Ali's jaw. Ali went on to fight another 10 rounds against Norton!!!

10 rounds with a broken jaw!!!

The fights get even more rough and tumble if you start looking back to fighters like Jack Dempsey. The rules were different then as you can see in the following Dempsey fight... watch the knockdown... and the count... the opponent ISN'T required to go back to his corner while the ref counts the downed fighter... psycho.

Jess Willard was one big *******. Look at the size of him compared to Dempsey!!

Yeah I wouldn't doubt it. I suspect that title goes either to Jack Johnson or to Sugar Ray Robinson. Both all time favorites of mine.

Amazingly someone kind soul uploaded the entire PBS documentary on Jack Johnson. Any aficianado of boxing doesn't want to miss this. It's stellar. Absolutely stellar!

I always like Sgar Ray leanord too. strategy tactics, skill, style, power. Can't think of a specific fight though..

Also i want to look into Jack Dempsey more. Go over his book - i skimmed it last time.. Some reckon it is the best book on hsingi stripped down body mechanics ever written.

He also has some interesting insights in there of how boxing was before the sport took hold. A lot more in it and much closer to other traditional boxing systems from elsewhere. of course we have a thread here by Loui on WMA that is a great resource for that sort of info.

    sorry a bit :topic:

Not to mention Foreman vs Frasier...... which is also a good demo of Foreman's power.

And I agree about Sugar Ray Robinson - the vs LaMotta fights are on youtube.

So do you mean as the jab comes in, slip outside it so you control the centreline, but as you do it you right hook? SO you opponent is essentially turning away as you hit them?

Yes, as the jab comes slip to your left and throw the right hook.

Its good to use if you notice the guy dropping his right hand when he throws the jab.

Here a perfect example is here if you can have a look. Its kickboxing i know but it is essentialy boxing. look at the 1:37 part of this clip.

    perfecto!

that is against a southpaw. But Tyson used to be the king of slip and hook in his young days.
