(yep, i made that title up all by myself. ) from www.news24.com: New Batwoman a Lesbian Years after she first emerged from the Batcave, Batwoman is coming out of the closet. DC Comics is resurrecting the classic comic book character as a lesbian, unveiling the new Batwoman in July as part of an ongoing weekly series that launched this year. The 1.78m superhero comes with flowing red hair, knee-high red boots with spiked heels, and a form-fitting black outfit. "We decided to give her a different point of view," explained Dan DiDio, vice president and executive editor at DC. "We wanted to make her a more unique personality than others in the Bat-family. That's one of the reasons we went in this direction." The new batwoman The original Batwoman was launched in 1956, and killed off in 1979. The new character will share the same name as her original alter ego, Kathy Kane. And the new Batwoman arrives with ties to others in the Gotham City world. "She's a socialite from Gotham high society," DiDio said. "She has some past connection with Bruce Wayne. And she's also had a past love affair with one of our lead characters, Renee Montoya." Montoya, in the 52 comic book series, is a former police detective. Wayne, of course, is Batman's true identity - but he has disappeared, along with Superman and Wonder Woman, leaving Gotham a more dangerous place. The 52 series is a collaboration of four acclaimed writers, with one episode per week for one year. The comics will introduce other diverse characters as the story plays out. "This is not just about having a gay character," DiDio said. "We're trying for overall diversity in the DC universe. We have strong African-American, Hispanic and Asian characters. We're trying to get a better cross-section of our readership and the world." The outing of Batwoman created a furor of opinions on websites devoted to DC Comics. Opinions ranged from outrage to approval. Others took a more tongue-in-cheeck approach to the announcement. "Wouldn't ugly people as heroes be more groundbreaking?" asked one poster. "You know, 200-pound woman, man with horseshoe hair loss pattern, people with cold sores, etc.?" DiDio asked that people wait until the new Batwoman's appearance in the series before they pass judgment. "You know what? Judge us by the story and character we create," he said. "We are confident that we are telling a great story with a strong, complex character." DiDio spent most of the morning fielding phone calls from media intrigued by the Batwoman reinvention. "It's kind of weird," he said. "We had a feeling it would attract some attention, but we're a little surprised it did this much."

Only in your head amigo! I suspect that even with the current drive toward diversity, having gay paedophile superheroes is probably a little too diverse... There was a bit of an uproar in the 1960s about the old Batman TV series, because some scallywags got it in their heads that the whole bachelor-boy Bruck Wayne and young "ward" **** Grayson thing was a bit suspect. The makers of the TV show introduced the character of Aunt Harriet for a while to try and have a female presence in the mansion and make it appear less like a wealthy gay man and his young lover.
Nah it was a not that recentish comic book with Robin as an adult, I am sure I read an article on it in the mainstream press at the time.
I'll see how it goes when I read the series. So far, I know I have been only moderately impressed by Marvel, and there haven't been any DC characters who have made me go "wow, gay alert, lemme pick up that book". I'm not gonna hold my breath.
lol I love it like diversity is their goal and not turning on 100s of young boys who read that crap... what a crock! if their goal was diversity male couple would have been more believeable but feeding lesbians to teenage boys and calling that a "act of inclusion" is INSANE by the same standard.. the porn indusrty has been promoting gay rights more effectively than any org in history thanks for the laugh
You are aware that this is not the first openly gay character in comics, right? Not even the first openly gay character in DC or Marvel comics, right? (And for the record, your commentary about porn companies being the biggest promoters of gay rights is rubbish..ever hear of Stonewall? The Mattachine Society? Hell, "The Advocate" magazine?)
it was a joke GC.. relax i am not aware of the status of DC and Marvel's character's sexual orientation.. even their names to be honest i was poking fun at how the comic's spokeperson spun the motive for the lesbian theme no need to get your panties in a bundle
Sorry, didn't find it all that funny, guess you need to work on your delivery Anyway, Marvel's current gay characters, just for your edification: Northstar (outed in Alpha Flight #106); currently in SHIELD custody due to brainwashing by The Hand, a ninja terrorist organization seen mostly in Elektra and Wolverine series Karma (outed in Machinex limited series); currently runs the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning grade school program Sunpyre (outed in Exiles); deceased. Was dating an alternate universe Spiderwoman. Wicca and Hulkster (outed in Young Avengers 2 or 3); both currently active members of the Young Avengers, although rumour mill has it the series is going bimonthy due to poor sales. It is an integral part of the current Civil War crossover going on in the Marvel Universe. Anole (sp) (outed in New XMen); currently one of the remaining students at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, although not currently training to be an XMan. Was on Northstar's squad due to his sexual orientation, although now working with Karma. Phat and another male character from XStatix (series ended a few years back because it sucked). Colossus and Northstar (Outed in recent issues of Ultimate XMen, an alternate universe series). Colossus is an active member of the XMen, Northstar is an active member of Emma Frost's Academy of Tomorrow. Probably the best handling of the situation, although the Young Avengers comes very close. Magik (Exiles series, not the New Mutants series); deceased. Bisexual, tried to have a fling with Sunpyre, who was dating Spiderwoman. Sunpyre turned her down because the Exile's Magik was a complete biyatch. Killed by an alternate universe Hyperion. That's just off the top of my head, without much research. Can someone help me out with DC?
And did I mention, not only were they outed, but they're dating It's an "alternate universe" series. There are the following books in the "Ultimate" universe: Ultimate Fantastic Four Ultimate Spiderman Ultimate Avengers Ultimate XMen There are a lot of "what if" scenarios going on, it's actually pretty cool. The FF movie was based on the Ultimate FF, not the mainstream FF, and Ultimate XMen killed off Gambit (w00t!) and provided Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner the Rogue/Iceman/Shadowcat triangle from X3.
I followed "The Ultimates" which was great, but I'm too much of a traditional X-Men geek to get on well with alternate versions.
Thanks for letting me know just how far out of date I am with the comics world  Of the characters you named (as opposed to referenced - Xavier, etc) I think I only recognised Colossus. I grew up with Marvel, but the weekly UK reprint versions were 10p a time when I was buying them. I think I may have missed one or two storylines along the way. (Anyone want to bye about a thousand old comics? I keep them in case I ever get round to reading them again...)
I didn't start collecting the Ultimate XMen until they officially outed Colossus. Then I picked it up. And with how well the stories are written, I'll keep collecting it.
LOL. I completely embrace my inner geek. Comic books and Dungeons and Dragons. It's actually funny... my gaming group contains 3 martial artists and a skinhead (among others). We all like comics and gaming, but we are *not* your typical comic book geeks. We can beat them up
