Hi..I have read about bamboo praying mantis and am interested in learning this style..can anyone tell me more about it?
Is there any internal training within the system that develops Qi-gong?
    I live in Birmingham, UK

    Welcome to the MAP.
Do you know if this style is available in your area?

Edit: for what it is worth I have this book on northern preying mantis [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Northern-Praying-Mantis/dp/1583942408"]http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Northern-Praying-Mantis/dp/1583942408[/ame]
It is not listed in this book so it is most likely a southern style or very rare, maybe both.

Jook Lum , I believe is also known as Bamboo Forest Southern Preying Mantis. I believe there is SPM in your area but I think it is more likely Chow Gar SPM rather than Jook Lum. It won't matter that much as the flavour of these branches won't be that different and I doubt you would know the differences.

I think that Butcher Wing on here is SPM and in your area so you might want to send a personal message to him.

In the UK there is a lot of southern Mantis and you can find practitioners on their own forums including

Hope this is of some help.

I study a derivative of Chow Gar SPM, which should be pretty similar. It is, in my totally unbiased opinion, a very typical Southern style. It has very conservative stances and footwork, and very few kicks. It focuses on quick hand techniques and short-range power, and engages at quite close range. Also, the style does use qi-gong to generate power.

You can find all of this with a quick google search, though. If you're already interested, the best thing to do is find a school and try it out.

I have been doing steelwire praying mantis for 1 yr now..unfortunately my teacher stopped training recently as he felt that he needed to develop his internal training to boost his health and power etc..thats why im interested in mantis that has a strong internal aspect to its training so both external and internal sides can be trained...i feel you cannot do one and ignore the other

Ahh I see... well Steelwire is essentially Chow Gar from what I remember. I am not sure that you necessarily need to change systems as you might find that some coaches/sifu's are more focused on internal training than others. Maybe a different sifu would solve your problem? The other question is do you suffer from whatever it is that is limiting your sifu's internal development as well or perhaps this only has happened because of something that happened in his past. Things worth considering.

The mantis community is out there and I am sure would be happy to point you in the correct direction.

The problem is I dont know many sifus..there arent many in bham who teach SPM in an authentic way let alone the internal aspect. Maybe I should learn Tai Chi and train internally with that and then go to the steelwire lessons..but then the problem of finding a good tai chi teacher..
