How will be off balance? You've closed the space and taken the centre? Now your on the outside take control of the elbow, bobs your uncle

I'm a little confused: How do you charge the knife-wielder while standing on only one foot?

This is why people who don't have experience shouldn't offer advice on knife defense....you would be shredded if you tried this

I'm not saying anyone should do this I'm just putting forward an idea, if you can't run and you have to engage, the last thing you want to do is give the attacker space if you go in take a slice on the forearm your forward momentum is going to push him off centre, so take the outside close the space so he can't use the knife then blast him in the head

    So what would you do.

It's a terrible idea - seriously, it's really bad so no absolutely don't say anyone should do it

What I would do is fall back on my training and take it as it comes - I certainly wouldn't be pulling a Daniel Larusso

I never said anyone should do it, someone asked to open up a discussion about knife defence and I just shared what I learned from a teacher who I rate, you seem to be a smart guy, what would you do in that situation?

Fall back on your training, that's helpful thanks

It's more helpful than recommending they commit suicide certainly...

The problem is there is no single reference point solution - is it s thrust? a slash? what angle/ how are they gripping? Blade style? blade length?

All these are before you even weigh in on individual characteristics

If you had actually read my earlier response you would see why my statement above was made - you cannot have a "solution" to a "knife attack" as if it was a singular entity

Offline, jam down, 2 on 1, zero pressure pointing, equalizer...all viable responses in given circumstances. All require actual training time not a "bolt on" to what you do already

So no, you aren't going to necessarily get what is right - sadly people are never backward in putting forward what is wrong though

If you don't know, don't guess - and don't pass on other peoples guesses either

Ok fair enough mate, but like I said I never told anyone to do anything, I just put forward an idea, and to be honest I don't think anyone's going to read this and get in a real situation and go what about what I read? What did that random man I never meet say again? You are overreacting and quite frankly you are showing off

It's a thread about the risks and dangers of knife based defense so you are damn right I am taking it seriously

If you aren't then perhaps don't post any more "serving suggestions"

Hannibal, for someone who's never trained in defense against knife and is cornered by a knife wielding attacker, would you say the best thing for them to do is to stay out of range the best they can if they can't run/outrun them and throw sidekicks and teeps to groin, liver, kidneys etc? It's the best plan I've got atm if I were ever in that situation.

No, I would not engage the legs at all to be honest. It reduces mobility, opens you up and creates infinitely more problems than it solves

Assuming I don't have an equalizer with me (which to be honest is never the case), I recommend 2-1 lockdown and ride the initial frenzy and hit them with everything you have

If you skillset is well practiced enough then other options may become available but "lockdown then shutdown" is the primary advice

    Grappling skill is a must

Ah. I only know boxing well though sometimes I practice sidekicks and teeps in shadowboxing at home lol. I've sparred hard in boxing though. Clueless about grappling. So basically I'm doomed LOL

Boxing is ironically probably going to be as good as anything else - high line attack to the head being a prime focus the chances of sparking your opponent are probably quite high compared to others

Boxing is actually one of my "top three" recommendations for an SD core

Interestingly enough, Bob Breen (you MUST know him) mentions briefly in his book "Fighting" that a sidekick is a usable defense technique against a knife attack. he briefly recounts a story of his friends being attacked by knife and the one who knew his sidekick well survived the attack. But obviously, he was probably a pro fighter unlike someone who just throws a sidekick every now and then in shadowboxing.

I'm guess your other two of the 3 recommendations for SD core are Muay thai and BJJ or Wrestling?
