I came across this online article published by "The Age", where they are suggesting that this is a possibility that could see the light in just 20-30 years due the genetic revolution we are currently experiencing (according to the researcher Karl Kruszelnicki):

IMO several questions will inevitably arise:

    1. Do you think this technology will be available to everyone?

    My answer: nope

    2. If the answer is positive (and with the current problems our world is experiencing, i.e. super-population, gradual reduction of the world's natural reserves, global warming), how will the planet accommodate to this change?

My answer: No, the planet will eventually collapse due to human pressure

What do you think? Is this technology possible? If so, is it really that good?

I agree with your first two answers.

Didn't read the article but have read many like it that talk about such from different perspectives.
The technology will eventually get that good, but we're not ready nor close to being ready for it.

Well. We'd all have to stop having babies or the world would get overpopulated very quickly. Even a really low birth rate would be disasterous.

Or develop space travel a lot quicker to enable the growth of the race across other planets

How would physical immortality work? You'd have to replace every part of the human body eventually, including the brain.

It will work by stopping the aging of these parts in the first place. If done right, extending the lifespan of every cell in our body, therefore delaying aging. The basic mechanism of cell immortality already exists; we call it cancer and we don't like it because it is uncontrollable. I'd guess that it will take a while before we get anything big out of this - and this is without taking into account the ethics debates - but limited therapeutic applications may well be on the way.

aww man that'll mean i'll be in my 40's or 50's when its available. I dont want an eternity of being middle aged.

    bcullen They are all perfect.

There are too many variables that the speculation hasn't accounted for. To gain actual immortality would require a complete re-design of the human genome, probably to the point of being a new species entirely.

They have and will continue to extend life expectancy and we will see some remarkable leaps in the near future, however; in the same way the drugs we use today would seem to be miracle cures to folks from the 1800s, gene therapy will have it's own set of limitations. At some point the treatments will stop working and nature will take its course.

Death by accident or murder may be the main categories of demise in the future.

We will have true immortality when we find a cure for death.

I don't worry too much about our technical advances, mother nature has proven pretty resilient to our tampering.

You do realise that that article is over 3 years old, right?

Sounds like a great time to introduce breeding licences to me

    1. Do you think this technology will be available to everyone?

No, only the filthy rich if its ever possible.

    2. If the answer is positive (and with the current problems our world is experiencing, i.e. super-population, gradual reduction of the world's natural reserves, global warming), how will the planet accommodate to this change?

The planet would collapse or would have to have a massive reduction in human population, say 90% so what resources we have left are saved for the afore mentioned filthy rich.....
