I was going through my hard drive, and noticed a file called "Windows Backup File", which open with Windows Backup Utility.

It is 6.6GB, but have never backed up my computer using anything other than a different program, backing up to DVD.

Is this just a file that has been automatically created, as a backup or image of my hard drive, or would it be safe to delete, and recover some GBs?

I have never used Backup on Windows - I have XP Home SP2, and didnt think that it was included with the package...

If you need the space (and you've already got backups on disk), you can safely delete it, it's certainly not needed for windows to function normally. It might be worth checking the windows backup utility just to see if you've got the backup scheduled as a regular job, because if you have the file may be back again tommorow.
