The weapons forum is full of Bujinkan members. The question isn't specific to the Bujinkan or indeed any other Kan or related group. It's a generic question.

Why not use the wider range of knowledge and experience?

EDIT - My 2000th post! Miniwave in celebration of me, awoohoo! :)

Yes it is general question I will elaborate , I'm currently a member of the bujinkan and would like to buy a sword the dimensions do not have to be from a particular ryu or period . I do hope that this narrows my thread - Also I have tried 9 circles , I do not want to go down the ebay road either . Again any info is appriciated .

Agreed. Have had the 'practical plus' for a while, good sword.
Had some bother with the saya splitting near the bottom though.

    Lord Spooky said:-
Two excellent questions that need consideration. I would also add another question though.

"At my current grade/level of experience, do I actually need a shinken?"

Bear in mind I have no idea who you are or what level of experience you have and take the above extra question as generic.

Oh, another generic question to ask yourself too.

"Does my instructor think it's a good idea for me to get a shinken at this stage of my training?"

At least you're asking him Dougal. You'd be amazed how many students just go ahead and do stuff without seeking at least basic guidance from their instructors.

Another general point to throw in from a Sword n00b!

Even though a sword may be classed as an iaito it'll still have a great bloody big point on the end  as the index finger of my left hand can bear witness to!

Again something to think about when you consider how the sword can be used in the Bujinkan.

So what's your budget and what do you want it for?

I do not have an "offical" budget , I want to get it for practice drawing etc etc , well thats my main reason - Rich your a hard man to please :)

Start cheap, then when you break it you only sob for an hour.
I'm not for these iaito weapons, if you are going to train with a sword you may as well buy a sword.

Cheness Type 8 Iaito looks good from www.bugu.co.uk

Great price too. And they do a matching waki which is rare for non-sharp swords. I shall be purchasing one before long.

I already have a Paul Chen Nami Iaito but it's a bit flimsy for even light contact. I think I may have bent it slightly just from waggling!
