We have had a few questions regarding training on rest days recently so I thought we should answer a few questions and uncover a few myths. Here is an interesting article from active.com. http://www.active.com/running/Articles/What-to-Do-on-Rest-and-Recovery-Days.htm The fitter and younger members here ask if training is okay on rest days. No is the answer. That is not to say you cannot keep active (active rest). 10 pin bowling, a walk, some stretching or foam roller work is okay, but you do not make gains when you are training. You make gains when you rest. By this I mean your training is of little use if you do not allow recovery time. This includes good sleep and nutrition. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-285--8256-0,00.html Your thoughts.
Thank you for posting the article, Simon. I find it tends to be the younger and/or more inexperienced trainees who ask about training on rest days (as if they didn't know how the body adapts to exercise). Probably best if us wise old farts point and snigger whilst enjoying our rest days with an ice cold beer watching the footie and make better gains than the young 'uns still working out on their rest days.
I never understood training on rest days... Surely if you're training it's not a rest day? I tend to find that a bit of mileage on the clock has curbed my desire for 7 days a week routines!
