What do you prefer most when it comes to avoiding an attack?

I do to a degree, but not as a specific class.

My Sunday class is more like a private session for senior students, so they get more information in terms of awareness and verbal skills.

I would be more inclined to teach them stuff that takes the sting out of a situation before it even arises (hopefully).

So for example you bump into someone in the pub. "Oh I'm so sorry I was miles away" Apologise even if not your fault type of things.

That's not to say I don't cover the sort of stuff you'd say while in the fence and facing an aggressor, but I like to include stuff that they can use before they get to that point and it's easy to say it but it works better when said with sincerity.
They'll also get tactile skills to go along with the verbal skills.

As for awareness I'd say this is covered a little less.

    Cheers Simon.

I'm a big fan of proper listening skills, it's something I think everyone should learn.

I'm sorry. I'll stop. All I wanted is to talk about martial arts but no one wants to talk to me about it. FINAL POST OFF TOPIC

I was covering self defence with a female student this Sunday.

She had a nice fence, good verbal skills, but was stepping back as she spoke.

This showed a nervousness and for every step she took back I stepped forward.

So in terms of awareness in this case it wasn't a case of how I was reacting, but how her actions caused me to react.

As soon as she stood firm my actions changed.

As a funny aside I was taking the role of the aggressor.

"Do I take the role of a male or female when I approach her?", I thought to myself.

I found myself saying, "oi you, did you touch my girlfriends ass?".

The look on her face was a picture and she dealt with my aggression by falling on the floor laughing.

    Dear THEFOREVERMAN,

    I have a few questions:

    1) Do you practice Niten Ichi-ryu through a legitimate source?
    2) If you do, through who?
    3) If you do not, where are you? I can point you at somewhere you can learn NIR.
    4) If you do not practice or do not wish to learn, what are you doing here?

This. If your attempts to de-escalate have failed and the fight is unavoidable, hit first, hit hard and get out.

So you screw around in the backyard with a broomstick? How very intense and disciplined! I mean I guess it's no worse than backyard brawling or something.

Studying Go Rin no Sho without the waza is pointless.
Musashi is not your direct teacher. Don't be a fool.

I know someone who actually practices HNIR in Michigan. However, I am loathe to introduce you him at this point due to your attitude. Until you grasp the reality of your situation, there is nothing I can or will do.

    Bad mood?

Obviously he can't teach me. But his teachings he wrote to pass on. And I will study that until I master what is within my reach. Reality, is beyond many.
