Pinan Shodan Pinan Nidan Pinan Sandan Pinan Yondan Pinan Godan I don't know any others well enough. (That said I don't know these that well either). Gary
So, I know this is an old thread, but I'm a black belt now, not a blue belt - I've learned five additional katas, so my favourites have changed. 1. Seisan 2. Bassai 3. Chinto 4. Chokesan (spelling is probably off) 5. Niseishi sho In my dojo, we don't learn Bassai Dai, Jion, Kanku Dai, or Empi until 2nd dan, but having watched the higher level dans perform those katas, I'm sure once I grade that high, they will be added to my favorites.
(1) Sanchin Kata - [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG0369WGcPs"]YouTube- SANCHIN KATA by MORIO HIGAONNA[/ame] (2) Gekisai Dai - [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNOYqXKNITI&feature=related"]YouTube- Karate kyokushin kata Gekisai dai[/ame] (3) Gekisai Sho - [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXwWRqFiTfY"]YouTube- Karate kyokushin kata Gekisai sho[/ame] (4) Seiyunchin - [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuo_6gjIoHs"]YouTube- SEIYUNCHIN KATA by MORIO HIGAONNA[/ame] (5) Kanku - [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cK0SwUSfQ0"]YouTube- Kanku Kyokushinkai kata[/ame] As far as my reasoning, none really, other than I really like these kata.
Mine have changed now, so here they are: Enpi Nijushiho Ji'in Hangetsu (but if a shock to me, but I think it's a useful training tool, so it should go in the list) Bassai Sho
hmmm... my five favourite kata NOW... rohai paiku matsumura bassai (still need to learn the hayashi version though) seienchin shisochin if i needed to keep five for training purposes... let's see... sanchin seienchin shotokan soochin OR paiku matsumura bassai naihanchi shodan btw llama, why the change of opinion re: hangetsu?
I've got to grips with it more, I think Hangetsu dachi is a fairly good training tool, and it feels more intuitive to me now, so it's easier to be able to draw positives from it.
They aren't really kata though, are they? They're a list of chinese forms you like doing. Plus, that's waaay more than 5. Jus' sayin'
I haven't done enought kata to have an 'all time five'. But, of the ones I've done, I like Wanshu the best.
Ok fine, Plum ball, (I know it sounds like a game) Chinese soft fist, Inward kung fu, Introduction to nachaku handling, (only form I know with them so far, next sash I get real forms) Twist of the tiger.
enjoy the journey. seriously. no matter how fast you promote there will always be something to learn. there's really no reason to feel rushed.
i'll just base it off the kata I've seen and what I liked watching and doing best. And just pick five off top of my head of what I liked the best. Heian Nidan Heian Sandan Kanku Dai Bassai Dai Heian Godan "enjoy the journey. seriously. no matter how fast you promote there will always be something to learn. there's really no reason to feel rushed." can i add that Karate is life long you can do it your whole life so why rush anyways? Got all this time to learn stuff.
If this is a kata you like the look of, but haven't done yet, trust me - your opinion of it will change
arise thread, for i have t3h new list (and probably so do most of those who posted ) from the kata i know NOW: sanchin naihanchi shodan pinan/heian yondan shotokan sochin kururunfa if i could learn any kata i wanted to add to the list: sanchin shotokan sochin kururunfa tomari passai nipaipo
Oh my, limiting the list to five... Sanchin (Goju) Sanseiru(Goju) Tensho(Goju) Tenshi (Meibukan Goju) Seisan (Goju) Of course by next week this will all have changed.
