Is it common for a judo specialist to outclass their BJJ counterpart on the ground?

All sources tend to espouse the view that a judo black belt's newaza is only equivalent to around a BJJ blue belt which seems a daft generalization to me.

What do you mean counterpart? It's common for fighters who are better on the ground to win.
Most Judo black belts aren't even at a blue belt level in BJJ terms. Good Judo black belts are often promoted swiftly to blue.

Sorry meant opponent. Would you say that the kid likely had BJJ training?

That generalisation is fine. I've heard about a very few judoka who are exceptional on the ground, though they tend to be world champions. Before the rule changes in judo there newaza was better I reckon.

I was told recently of a world champion (in judo) who was in Brazil and was training under a black belt. After the first session the BJJ instructor straight up gave this judo lad a brown belt. He said the judo guy was black belt level but that would be extremely frowned upon if he handed him one.

World Champions are an exception, though, right? The athleticism required pretty much makes it possible for them to go on to be awesome at anything, never mind things that are related to their specialty.

Brazil is a massive exception in the Judo newaza game - it's obvious watching the olympics and most commentators talk about brazils strong newaza game.

why do you think the gracie dojo storms were in the judo clubs of the USA and not brazil? :p

the guys who started judo clubs there were judo newaza experts like satake (maeda's assistant) and even maeda himself when he returned to brazil.

The judoka wasn't Brazilian, which is why it was an exceptional case :)

Its a nogi match, which makes it look like nicolas collier trains in more then standard judo and the opponent isnt a bjj blackbelt, the title says advanced so im guessing hes 3plus years training.

Thats very unusual as theres a lot of bjj that isnt in the judo rules, unless theyve been cross training for years, like travis stevens, and ray stavens did.
