How in the name of Thors Mighty Hammer and Crowleys mighty codpiece can absolute drivel like this still exist in todays world?

It's clear this individual has no experience, no clue and is making stuff up - or more accurately he has made up a scenario to fit his art instead of actually researching it.

His advice of "run away" is ironically solid - his technique is abysmal

Compare the above to how a legitimate pratcitioner with experience demonstrates it

I don't know Hannibal, that first one looked very clean, dignified, graceful even. It seems like that would work a lot better than hugging a dude for 3.5 minutes.

The irony is that this guy has a video of slipping punches and has him fighting in a ring! :D

Graceful is all very well, but how likely would it be to actaully work? I thought it looked very compliant, like his mate wanted to let him kick the knife out of his hand. (I gave up watching after that.) I've never tried to kick a knife out of someone's hand, so I may be talking rubbish, but my gut feeling is that this is something you'd see in films, rather than something which is going to have a very high percentage chance of working in real life.

Mind you, if I was mugging someone with a knife (!) I wouldn't stick it out in front of me like that. I always understood that the golden rule is to lead with your empty hand and keep the knife tucked in by your side, ready to go.

(Might start a new thread on how to mug people...)

The "old kicking the knife out of the hand with the attacker holding it out like a board demo" technique

    Pssst I'm kidding ;)

I think it's ultra compliant and ultra low percentage. You might as well hope the assailant trips and drops the knife.

    Is that a "shocking knife"/

    Cool

We used to use a large felt red marker.
(It reminded us how we contort and do almost anything in order to not get marked in grammer school-but with the weapons defense, we actually practice defensive methods)

What I liked about that one was the guy with the knife decided to make life a bit difficuilt and the disarming fellow was happy admitting it in the commentary.

The first video is just mind bendingly bad.

The sad fact is that even this second video of "realistic" engagement with a shock knife and padding starts from an unrealistic distance with no pre-fight engagement and looks (though it may not be) like a pre-empt not a reaction. Not a fully live situation if you like. Just IMO of course, it's obviously a spur of the moment vid not something with a big set-up.

If we learn nothing else, don't play with knives kids.

How do I link a video from YOUTUBE?

I just checked the shockknife... a bit pricey. Sad, as it seems like a great training tool!

The knife defence techniques at my dojo are very similar to the second video: "control the knife hand"

You guys really should. The more good stuff pitched against the dross on youtube etc the better.

People can believe all sorts of nonsense. Some always will. But if they search on "knife defence" and find an equal number of vids showing something realistic as opposed to crescent kick nonsense then we can only hope they'll see the obvious and find good training.

Just paste its URL into the message. Do not use preview post, as it ruins the url.

I did actually crescent kick a broken bottle out of someone's hand once while bouncing...but it was dumb luck that I blame on years of TKD and would never attempt or recommend it again.

And afterword, I looked at the guy and just said, "Roadhouse".
