I've picked people who I think are great, technical singers as opposed to people I think have good voices or voices I just like. Smokey Marvin Rob (To this day I still laugh at the reaction of the metal community when he came out...wasn't it blatantly obvious, especially in this video!!) As for people with the best voices, the two greatest out there for me are probably Shane McGowan and Nocturno Culto (Ted to his mum and dad) from Darkthrone on their later albums. They probably can't hit the notes quite right, but the expression in their voices is something else.
It's hard to think of someone at the same level as Mary Poppins and John Denver and Freddie Mercury, though. Maybe Pink ... Ya, for a current singer, she is the best.
Pink live is amazing, due to several reasons: A) amazing singer B) amazing live shows, spinning upside down whilst singing etc C) everyone is very polite at the concerts D) no queue for the bar E) no queue for the toilets F) everyone is super polite exiting the car parks. It honestly made metal gigs look second best!
I went to a Billy Ocean concert many years ago and when he sung a ballad you could have heard a pin drop. The audience were transfixed.
Like Bozza, I am picking those I think are the best technically brilliant vocalists. There are favorites I could post that are great, but not on the scale of Freddie or my next choice. Ann Wilson of Heart. Her voice has a richness to it. Amazingly beautiful and powerful voice. Emotional, with range and just perfect hitting of notes. One of the many reasons this is my all time favorite band is her voice. There are so many songs I could post, and some may be better songs overall. But this one showcases her vocal skills at their best. This one shows her harder rocking edge to her amazing voice.
An obvious choice. Gimme Paul Di'Anno's raw, slightly punk vocals any day of the week over Dickinson (style over technique), but along with Halford, Dio and King Diamond, Bruce is easily one of the best rock or metal vocalists. I thought I'd post this song 'cause......Burr.
I can believe that. He is good. Except, now you have, "Get outta my dreams" going through my head! Ha!
Not sure if she is young enough for Pretty in Pink, but she is younger than my other posts here. Stunning voice! Joss Stone. Deviated from the route of becoming a major pop star to make the music she wants. She has been traveling around the country singing with people from countries all over the world. This song showcases her vocal talent. This is one of her clips doing the touring and singing with people all over the world. Total respect for her as a true musician. She also has the respect of older musicians - doing all sorts of duets with them. Here is one example. She has also worked with Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Jeff Beck, among others.
