Let's hear about your favourite sword & sorcery films. Anything from the genre-establishing Conan the Barbarian (the original John Milius version) to any of the slew of 80s knockoffs. And any newer examples you've seen. I'm not going to get all pedantic about S&S versus high fantasy and all that. Lord of the Rings, while fantastic, isn't S&S in my view. But I'm certainly not going to make a fuss about someone else citing it. In no particular order: Solomon Kane: An adaptation of RE Howard's character. Not particularly faithful to the original stories, but a good solid example of the genre all the same. Conan the Barbarian: The remake starring Jason Momoa was, once again, not a faithful recreation of the original tales. But I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was anyway. Beastmaster: An 80s guilty pleasure. I saw this movie more frequently than I saw the inside of any school textbook. Marc Singer and Tanya Roberts on one side. Rip Torn on the other. Fantastically cheesy stuff. Any Sinbad movie featuring the work of Ray Harryhausen: Enough said really And GO.
First Conan the Barbarian is a classic's classic and anyone who says otherwise is no friend of mine. Haven't seen the new one though. Ditto on Solomon Kane. I think a rewatch is in order. Does The Hobbit count? Because I enjoyed the heck out of the first one. Other than that, er... nothing comes to mind. :dunno:
"The Sword and the Sorcerer" (that must qualfy as S&S right?) was one of the first films I watched on home video. My dad's old clunky VHS. I'm sure I was horribly under-age. Some great things in that film. Weird bat things that wrap people up and digest them. Weird fanatics that throw spikey things in the ceiling and then hang themselves. Although...I'm sure I'm mixing it up with Beastmaster.
You are, at least partially. The bat things were Beastmaster. Have to rewatch to see about the spikey things. But yeah, The Sword and the Sorceror was fun. What was that one with the sword with three blades, two of which could be launched? There's also (no endorsement intended) Ator, Gor, and Krull for starters.
krull was awesome. throw in another vote for the original conan too. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBGOQ7SsJrw"]Conan the Barbarian: The Musical (Arnold Schwarzenegger) - YouTube[/ame]
I loved the Beastmaster and Krull! Does Ladyhawk count? Also, I would have to cite Lord of the Rings, just because it has swords and some sorcery in it and is an awesome series of films.
I have fond memories (and a VHS copy) of "Fire and Ice". Rotascoped Frank Frazetta film directed by Ralph Bakshi that never quite hit the spot but I love it. I wanted to be "Darkwolf" when I was a kid.
Does Willow count? Jason and the Argonauts? The skellington fight scared the wee out of me when I was a kid. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF_Fi7x93PY"]Some old Greek dude and a skelly or 5[/ame] I quite enjoyed the Solomon Kane film...I much prefer the character to Conan. I should give the book a read. If I remember right, Hawk the Slayer was quite good. whatever happened to the Red Sonja remake with Rose McGowan?
Army of Darkness - also one of the best films ever made period Excalibur (although a bit meodramatic) Flight of Dragons (animated and haven't seen it for years but has fond memories for me) LOTR trilogy (what needs to be said?) The Hobbit (see above)
