Got another night of house-sitting, so here's sambo thread 2.0.
Just discussion of any techniques. Post a video of your favorite throw, jointlock, combination etc. Ask about any technique. Post a video collection of techniques. Dissect a throw from grips to the mat. Just so long as it's about some technique, anything goes.

I'll start with a collection of throws from Igor Kurinnoy and videos of one of my favorite throws.

Just found a video on the flying armbar that ends in a variation I don't see much outside of sambo and that goes against common wisdom in modern grappling circles. The crossed ankles is considered poor form because it makes it difficult to clamp the thighs onto the reciever's arm and keeps you from getting your hook in around the neck, however in this case he's using the crossed ankles to scoop under the reciever's far shoulder and scrunch his shoulders together. It prevents effective shrimping and makes any arm-based escapes like a swim difficult. It's one of my favorite "armbar" rides. The only reason I don't use it exclusively is because leaving the shin clipped into the ribs and lifting the near shoulder is a little more oppressive and a lot easier to spin into suddenly, even though it's much much easier to escape.

Here are some Chinese wrestling throws. You can see a lot of "similiarity" between Chinese wrestling (SC) and Sambo.

Nice. I'm a big fan of the front trip- holding the opponent's leg. Is there a reason for the high elbows or is that purely aesthetic?

And I agree, I think there was a lot of collaboration that doesn't get talked about very much.

Nice little instructional on bokovoy, one of the more visually impressive lifts in Sambo.

It's a "follow on strike" that you punch at your opponent while he is down. The demo just raise the elbow without the striking downward. It just reminds you that throwing is not the end of fight. One guy in that clip has cross trained Judo and Sambo. His partner also has cross trained wrestling. Some ground game is also integrated.

Since both arts involve with jacket (Gi), the grip fight such as how to:

    - break your opponent's grips.
    - take advantage on your opponent's grips,

will be interested to compare. Judo guys may be interest in this too.

Well I meant in the stance before making contact actually.

You mean the combat stance. Raising guard invite kick, dropping guard invite punch. The Chinese wrestling uses a very special combat postrure that your arms are also straight.

by the way i want to ask, i've been reading about sambo and combat sambo, are those 2 diferent styles, or are they the same, also does them have striking? because i have seen some sambo guys kicking and punching.

i was training with a pretty high level judo-ka friend and he said he preferred cross ankle also, he showed me that in childrens comps it can be used as a pin when you've tightened and secured it.

one way he said to tighten it was to squeeze like you would in do-jime and it causes a tighter clamp.

it's also nice t set up a double or opposing armbar as it sets you up to easily triangle the furthest arm.

They're the same style, just different rulesets. Sport sambo is just grappling, no strikes. Some organizations, like FIAS, ban twisting leglocks, chokes and spinelocks, too. In combat sambo, there are strikes, but there are many different sanctioning bodies and many different rulesets, so some will allow certain strikes, like knees, headbutts or elbows while others won't. There is also a lot of variety in what sort of protective gear is required or permitted. Some schools don't train for combat sambo and from what I've seen many schools that do focus on grappling. Those that do include striking will generally focus on boxing, since getting a kick countered could easily mean getting single legged. That's not normally a big deal, but in sambo, any throw where you fall on your back and your opponent stays standing means you lose right away. So the kicks are a bit stifled.

Also, in the US, there's freestyle sambo, which allows all submissions but no strikes, and doesn't allow a win in one throw.
