Anyone else here into highly technical, complicated music? I'm talking genres like Jazz, Fusion, Progressive-Metal, Prog-Rock, Classical and World music, stuff which takes real skill and ability for the musician to master. Odd time-signatures, crazy harmonies, epic arrangements, I can't get enough of it! Jazz-musicians like Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth etc. Bands like Planet X, Dream Theater, Symphony X, The Flower Kings, the list is endless, but not very well appreciated in a main-stream sense.

Anyone else here into this kind of stuff? :)

have you ever listened to miles davis' "at fillmore east", "black beauty", and "live evil". chronicles of the late 60's early 70's davis jam band with chick corea. that's some awesome intricate stuff.

hmm interesting description of the music. Not quite heard it like that before. Here are some artists you might check out. Not everyone's taste. Many aren't comfortable with music that has lyrics in another language. But the list below are some amazing musicians:

disclaimer: YouTube is almost always crap sound quality and the video can distract from the genius of a particular piece.. especially if poorly shot or streaming badly. So just use it as a reference point. I suggest a good sound system or a top quality pair of headphones and a free afternoon... and you'll be hooked. An entirely new soundscape.

Ali Farka Toure (Malian guitar legend and singer)
Boubakar 'Kar Kar' Traore (also an amazing Malian guitar player)

(try to get a copy of his Cello concertos - superb. YouTube won't do them justice)

John Lee Hooker (Delta Blues king with interesting timing that confounded most musicians)

at any rate... that is a short list of what's I'm jamming most of the time. It's just the tip of the iceberg. Once you start exploring the timing and arrangements of central Asian, south Asian and African string instruments you'll realize just how much amazing talent is out there. Which at some point is going to lead you to Afro Beat... and then you're wrecked... you'll start collecting vinyl again and spend your days playing records. :D

    Enjoy!

Good stuff, prefer Kansas and King Crimson myself, but Jethro Tull, Yes, Pink Floyd, its all good stuff!

Miles Davis is the man, I've got 'So What', 'Filles De Kilimanjaro', 'In A Silent Way', 'Bitch's Brew', and 'A Tribute To Jack Johnson', killer stuff, and featuring just about every top jazz musician of today when they were young starting out with Miles.

Thanks for those, I prefer instrumental myself, but I can handle singing in another language... I'll check em out sometime.

I love the microtonal structure in the eastern music, its got a whole extra dimension that western music lacks.

I like some prog rock/prog metal. I like Dream Theater and I'll be seeing them later in the year as they tour.

I also like classical and am a bit of a Hans Zimmer fan - Crimson Tide, Gladiator, Backdraft, Last Samurai - I love those soundtracks :)

Not my cup of tea, but you might want to check out mathcore - bands like the Dillinger Escape Plan.

Also, if you're a fan of riffs and whatnot, check out rodrigo y gabriella

I love anything that successfully blends styles or takes a different take on an existing style.

For some African Jazz, Solomon Ilori

    Omicron is around.

I'm a jazz major at school...one semester left to go in my degree! So yes, I listen to a lot of music that most people would consider...."strange". Here are some vids, just off the top of my head:

Hot House: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91dolWWdetI"]YouTube - Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie- (Hot House)[/ame]

Mercy, mercy, mercy: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRrFWp4DUho"]YouTube - Mercy, mercy, mercy[/ame]

Work Song: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBxAC4ywaJ4"]YouTube - Cannonball Adderley Sextet- Work Song[/ame]

Delta City Blues (this one is great!): [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcIIkrBLUmg"]YouTube - Michael Brecker - Delta City Blues - 1998[/ame]

And last but not least, a bass solo by Jaco Pastorius. If you think you've hard the bass played well before, this video may change your mind:

    Mingus is cool... :)

Sweet, I saw Dream Theater last year when they came down to Aus, fantastic show, got to meet the band as well which was unreal! Have you heard their new album, its probably their best in quite a while!

Hans Zimmer is great, I particularly love the Pirates Of The Carribbean soundtrack.

    r y g are very cool.

I don't really like the mathcore stuff, too much core and not enough math... haha

In the ultra technical metal stuff I prefer the more interesting 'tech-metal' or 'fusion-metal', bands like Spiral Architect, Watchtower, fool Ink, Blotted Science, Exivious, Twisted Into Form, now that is the good stuff! And none of the insessant screaming...

    lol

Michael Brecker was amazing, I've got his last album 'Pilgrimage' with Herbie Hancock, Brad Meldhau, Pat Metheny, John Patitucci, Jack DeJohnette, such a ridiculously high profile jazz lineup!

And yeah Jaco was unreal, still a benchmark in bass playing.

Gotta love the band who combine the power of the electric guitar and the kalashnikov

I'd also put ry cooder into this category. The man has l33t guitar skills. I have the album with him and ali fakatoure.

I saw DT at the Download festival this year. Not entirely sure that they're a festival band - not 4th billed on the main stage anyway. They played about 4 songs and it was over! I need to listen to them in their entirety, which is why I'm going to see them live this year.

I quite like the new album - I've got the 3 disc special edition.

Ref: Hans Zimmer - Crimson Tide is probably my favourite of his. Listening to that in a dark room, with no other noise/light = win!
