I decided, after the film, that I have let my knees and hips decide that I should not do Chen. I did Chen years ago, loved it, it was my favorite taijiquan style. After that film, I think I will give it a try again to see if I can do it or not. I never got to deeply into Chen as compared to Yang. I knew the 18 form, Laojia Yilu and push hands. September 09, 2020 It appears that things that seem promising in the beginning to assist in knee recovery, turn out to be detrimental. Santi Shi, help for a few days and then it began to hurt Wing Chun helped for a few weeks and then it began to hurt Chair Yoga and Yoga helped for a few weeks and then it began to hurt. I am still doing all teh PT/MD exercises for the knees and legs and I am still working with the TotalGym. I added the exercise bike today and peddled for the massive distance of 1 mile at the blistering speed of 10mph. That seemed to help (strengthen) both knees.... Time will tell. Also I am sill working on the Sun Style Short form I know and I now have the first 2 of 3 sections of traditional Yang. It is at a much higher than normal stance, and the kicks are horrible, but I am progressing.
9/22/2020 Cortisone shot in knee....now I wait 3 weeks and see the MD again and see how it is going....if not better, I am guessing another MRI and possible more surgery.....yippee yahoo...can hardly wait and my exercise bike broke.... after about 30 years of use...cheap piece of junk
09-29-2020 Knee was getting better, and last Friday (09-25-2020) I would have said it was great.....Saturday it twinged a bit, but no big deal. Sunday it started hurting like crazy, got acupuncture. It felt better the rest of Sunday and felt OK this morning (not no where near as good as last Friday. At 8:30 this morning, it stopped bending, and was hurting. Took me 30 minutes to get it to bend again, and now, I'm back walking with a cane.
Update First, I tend forget I’m older than I use to be No bike due to ongoing complications to previous knee surgery. (on a side note, they now believe it is scar tissue and I am back at PT to see what they can do about breaking that up so I can walk normally again.) I was doing this Total Gym M, W, F Light Aerobic Weights T, Th, Sat Core M. W, F, S Baduanjin M – Sun I up the level of the total gym from 4 to 5 and tried to keep this up. That was when I realized, I’m not in my 30s anymore…heck…I’m not in my 40s and awfully darn close to not being in my 50s Once I up the level I was in pain, not muscle pain, but joint pain. Muscles were getting needed work, and if I want to progress strength wise I need to up the level. But due to age, infirmity and what has been a lot of forced siting around doing nothing, my body apparently needs more recovery time than it use to So, I am going to give this a try Total Gym T, Th Light Aerobic Weights M. W, F or Sat Core T. Th, S Baduanjin M – Sun I have also come to the conclusion that I have been, at times focusing on the goal I wanted to reach and not the road to get there. Going to commit to chair yoga again, at some point ,and not rush it to get back to the yoga of my youth....only a few years ago actually. My rushing it, in order to get back to what was normal, may be what is causing the temporary gains and then the greater losses...as far as the knee concerned
January 05, 2020 Been having a rough time figuring out how to do anything aerobic. The knee is still an issue, even after months of physical therapy, which insurance ended yesterday. I will see the MD later this month and see what he has to say. My plan is to avoid more surgery if at all possible I think I may have found something semi-aerobic, that I can do. I cannot do much standing so I had to go with seated, trying to get to 4 to 5 times a week 3 rounds (seated) 30 second intervals; jumping jacks (without the jumping, forward arm swings, press ups, Jab/Cross, hook, upper cut, side stretch (end round 1) 3 rounds (seated) 15 reps; (light weight dumbbells) Military press, Curls, Crunch, 1/s curl waist to shoulder, flies, 1/2 curl waist to thigh, Bent over pulls, bent over tricep, side bend (end round 1) Standing, 1 round, 10 reps, light weight done fairly slow. Xingyiquan 5 elements strikes; palm, back fist (from Piquan), strike/block from Zuanquan, Bengquan short punch, Paoquan punch/block, Zuanquan (2 versions) Strike/block) The only taijiquan I am currently able to du is a Sun Style Short Form I purchased a recumbent bike, because it is suppose to be easier on the knees but i cannot currently use it if I want to walk when I'm done. Every other day Total gym; Pulls, Seated Surfer, Rows, Press Bow Flex: Basically a Chin up and then a pull up...but you are seated pulling down. Cut down on Carb intake, I have been eating way to many carbs while sitting around with my leg elevated and heat, or ice, on my knee. My Goal is to get back to Yang Taijiquan and if I am lucky, Xingyiquan.
March 8, 2021 Well, everything is on hold. I will be getting a knee replacement. I find out monday if it sia full replacement or a partial
Ah, sorry to hear that. But hopefully it will help you to get rid of the pain.. Let us know how things turn out.
May 7, 2021 And now, my knee. If the right goes well nd I can take the recovery, I will be getting the left done as well. But wait, we're not done...... after that, could very likely be the hips get replaced next. As the MD said, in order if replacement, base on what he sees...Right knee #1, Left knee #2, right and left hip are both #3, so it does not matter which one is first The knee will be replaced, but with a system that will allow me to do everything I could do before, run, bike, etc. As the MD said, I cold play tennis if I wanted to afterwards. He explained it to me but I couldn't tell you everything he said. I can say he said that it is supposed to last 30 years... I hope I'm around that long to wear it out. He also explained my hip issues. Apparently, it is possible, the high kicks I use to train, see TKD and Shaolin kung fu, combined with my hips already being slightly malformed, cause the hip bone to hit the pelvis causing a buildup of bone on the neck of the ball of the ball and socket joint. Surgery likely late June or early July
