Well, I'm officially old. Looking through my workout music the last two workouts and nothing seemed to work for me. Then, last time I tried "Handel" and it was great, And tonight, "Vivaldi the Four Seasons"..... yup, I'm a geezer...its official
I can’t help thinking that yoga is hard on knees. At least some yoga poses seem like they’d put a lot of strain on the knee? What do you think?
Some are, especially if done incorrectly. But some simply are not for someone with arthritic knees. I looked at a lot of routines for arthritis, many of which just by looking at them I knew would hurt more than help. It was also about that time I realized these routines were made by super bendy 20 something people who never had arthritis and had no understanding as to what it was. Also they seemed to think one routine fit all types of arthritis. So I made one of my own, that worked great, prior to surgery, but after not so great. So I am looking to design another, but it is trial and error based on how it effects my knees. I may have a routine again, but it is focusing more on flexibility and strength for proper posture than anything else.
Been awhile some progress has been made in the flexibility department, not much, but some been stretching out these old arthritic hips and knees regularly and I have gained a little. the last stretch I do is on my old ProForce When I started I could get to 7.5 to 8 turns of the wheel and now I am up to 9.5 turns. Also can get the old leg up a little higher than I could prior to regular stretching. It is not using the top of the refrigerator to stretch like I cold do in my 20s and 30s, but it is better than it was 7 months ago. Also finished the Cheng Manching form, looking to meet with one of his students in the spring to see what he thinks.
Been working on a new Yoga sequence that was knee friendly. It appears some of my favorite poses, Warrior poses, are causing me knee issues since the aurthroscopic surgery The New Sequence that I hope to start this evening. I will see how my knees take this sequence Beginning • Breath-work (Pranayama) • Mountain • Crescent • Side bend Arthritic Old Dude Salutations • Mountain Pose • Forward Fold • Down dog • Plank • Four Limb Staff • Locust • Sphinx • Upward Facing Dog • Plank • Downward Dog • Lunge (if possible with knees) • table • Chair pose Standing & Balancing Postures • Mountain • Tree • High Lunge (If knees can handle it) • Pyramid • Triangle • 5 Star • Wide Legged Forward Fold • Half-moon • Eagle Pose (If knees can handle it) Core • Boat • Crunches • Staff Seated Yoga Sequence / Supine • Twist/Hip Stretch • Rodney Yee Leg/Hip stretch w/strap • Supine Pose (Reclined Cobbler) • Happy Baby • Shoulder Stand • Plow • Bridge • Staff Pose • Shavasana End Simplified Total Gym and very simplified Dumbbell routine to follow as well as stationary bike work Still doing the Short Sun Taijiquan routine. Now doing the Cheng Manching short form as well Thinking of returning to the Long Sun Taiji routine I was working on and possibly a Northern Wu down the road. The Long Sun and the Northern Wu taijiquan depends on the availability of teachers I need to get back in to the swing of things, I did not expect this simple little surgery to cause me this many issues with exercise. Going to do the seminar I was asked to do, but it is not a forms seminar, it is a movement and applications seminar.
Well.... Not posted here in a bit, because I can't do much. I can, and I am, riding the stationary bike but that is about it. The right knee, the one that did not have surgery, has become an issue. I should call the MD but if he wants to do surgery I cannot do anything until after winter. However, I should call him and if there is no improvement by the first of the year. Getting daily acupuncture and wearing a knee brace, but it is not doing well. Hoping it clears up or that it is only a cortisone shot.
I'm very sorry to hear that. I hope there's a non-surgical treatment for your knee. Have you looked into the possibilities for either a hyaluronic acid injection or platelet rich plasma injection? Take care and I hope things improve!
Looks like I'm going to have to call the MD about the knee Today; Sunday, January 5, 2020 Exercise Bike Stretching Stance training Baduanjin Read a bunch of articles today on old folks exercising and I am going to try what they say, instead of what I have been doing, as far as strength training goes, and at the moment it is all Total Gym. I have been doing 2 to 3 reps of 10 and seeing little to no progress. What I am reading says don't do reps, work to exhaustion, with lighter weight, then move on to the next exercise. I already knew this, but I guess I needed a reminder. Exercise, even though it may hurt a bit, is much better for osteoarthritis than not exercising Also made a big mistake and took one of those biologicaL age tests, last time I took one, a few years back, had me 5 years younger than I am, now, it has ne 11 years older...DANG!!! I guess Andy Andy Dufresne (from Shawshank Redemption) was right when he said "I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living or get busy dying. Frankly, I have things I want to do when I retirer and based on the biological age thing I will only have about 4 years to do it after retirement. So, whether I take an online biological age calculator seriously or not, I think it is time to get busy living, arthritis be damned. I have almost 50 years in martial arts and almost 30 of that is in Taijiquan and various other Chinese martial arts and qigong. Read a small libraries worth of health and nutrition books in that time. Time to put all that stuff to work I guess.... as well as get off my lazy butt and stop using arthritis as an excuse (again)
