Just heard news of a 6.3 magnatude earthquake hitting 10km south of Christchurch on New Zealands south island. Wishing all the best to all our poor trans tasman neighbours. hope none of you are hurt.
Am in Dunedin which is about 4 hours south of Christchurch and we felt it here, felt an aftershock bout 20mins ago. Been seeing video of huge rocks falling on buildings, people screaming trapped inside buildings and stuff. The september quake was a 7.2 but that one was deeper, this one was only 5km deep. already been a lot of reports of fatalities too. Gonna take a while to recover!
Christchurch got off really lucky in the September quake. How often do you hear of a 7.1 quake affecting a major city and there being zero casualties? This time around, it's very much worse. It was a shallower quake but it also hit during a weekday lunchhour (the previous one was about 4AM on a Sunday morning). No word on number of casualties, but it does not sound promising at the moment. The damage also is substantial.... http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/4688671/Christchurch-quake-Running-report http://www.stuff.co.nz/4688231/Deaths-destruction-in-Christchurch-quake
Ouch Christchurch... one of my mates Maitreya is a rapper who's originally from Christchurch. Chur to the Chur as he says. 6.3 on the Richter scale is big enough to hurt and kill people. Hope they're all good.
Poor Christchurch, Enough with the natural disasters down here already. Hoping all the kiwi mappers and their folk are ok. paul
Yes, and concentrated all in one place too. The Queensland Floods killed 35 people, across a wider area.
I feel really bad for the affected people there and wish my best for them. I know many that went through Katrina and it is devastating for the people involved in any type of disaster.
Holy crap. I have to contact my sister. She lives near Auckland, so she's probably ok, but still. EDIT: Just phoned my parents and they said my sis is fine.
