oooh .... controversy abrewing over at the networks.

Seems the XMA boyz.... Matt, Chris and Jackson (better known as Sideswipe - "a group of attractive shirtless XMA martial artists") have also appeared in NBC's (godawful show) America's Got Talent .... rumor is they were axed from the comp as they have contracts with Final Fu!

Sideswipe also was on a Fox "talent show" a few years back. Geez, I knew I was right when I pegged the "stars" of Final Fu as a bunch of attention-whores.

I have to disagree on the MMA being the "highest level of martial sport" thing, simply because of groups like the Dog Brothers and Call to Arms. MMA = wide range of striking and grappling skills. Full Contact stickfighting = wide range of striking, grappling, and weaponry skills.

And man, I think will fill out an application for a future season. Right after I master the flying knee to the head. I want to get disqualified my first round in the most spactucular way possible ^_^.

I'm sorry.... I'm doing that macho posturing thing again, aren't I?

    To M. McClaw,
I don't define MMA the way some around here do (Many just see it as an NHB-oriented MT, BJJ, Boxing-mix). The FMA's have been a strong part of my training for over 25 years and I am a guro in more than one FMA. Our schools also have included RBSD into our MMA system, but OTOH, we have not discarded our TMA roots either.

I do stand by that IMO, NHB-style sparring is the highest level of martial sport sparring. Other opinions may vary.

I saw this show for the first time last night, and I finally get what all the fuss is about. It was hard to watch at first because of the super light contact rules, etc., but I got sucked in. (BTW those twins are hot) :D

Maybe for next season, they ought to tweak the rules a bit, and embrace some sort of classification system. Seems like it would be better, but maybe this weird sparring of mis-matches is appealing to non-MA viewers? Who knows. It's beautiful people play fighting on the beach, what's not to love? :D

Finally let's talk about the scoring! What is up with that? In Nicole's fight she scored 20+ points in the 3rd round yet she barely through a technique, and the few she did were blocked. I could not see how she ended up with 53 points.

Because the cameraman is a drunk monkey humping a coconut. Thats how you miss a lot of the fight.

So they have a mixed set of martial arts from where-ever in the world (at least China, Korea and Japan though i havent seen it so there probably more)...yet they have japanese writing on the website...AND choose the word "fu", which is chinese (and not japanese) and in itself has no relavent meaning unless combined with gong and even then the word gongfu has no specific connection with martial arts anyway except thats its a westernised mis-enterpretation of the real chinese word.

They should really do a little research before hand instead of just catering to a market thats largely ignorant of martial arts and the culture that they're refering to.

Thats the kind of informed coverage that martial arts really needs.

CKava Just one more thing... Supporter

Show sounds like its just another themed American 'competition' type show where the competitors go through various tasks and try to outdo each other interpesed with various interviews. I don't see why anyone is suprised that it is a travesty of a representation of martial arts. It's just a stupid themed TV show.

If you wanted to see decent stand up fighting from proper martial artists from various countries fighting with various styles then it already exists and its called K1.

    quick on the Jab

I saw the show, stupid but strangley intertainig. half way throught the sparring it occured to me that a boxer with a quick jab would rule the sparring portion, or someone who could windmill punches fast. totally useless things seem to score the most points (what is the point of a jumping kick not delivered to the head, or as a sweep counter?), I 'm not saying that those types of kicks are useless just that I don't see the point when they are not being used as knockdown/crushing blows. Just another silly reality show, oh well. I would like someone on that show to just knock out their opponent and tell the stupid host that they practice !Martial Arts! not some silly sport for points.

Fair enough. I just think that a lot of people get so cought up in the "completeness" of MMA, they forget entirely about weaponry as a part of martial arts. I think it's very cool that you incorporate into your teaching.

Plus, MMA won't teach you how to ride a horse. Ask any Mongol or Hun: horsemanship is an essential part of the martial arts :p.

Please don't make me think that hard. I've been named Admin of one forum, beat down the admin of another forum in MMA sparring, and "sparred" with a "master" of Cantonese MMA (ask Slip, please)...all in one night...my brain hurts...

Nothing can be worse than MegaJesus-san at this hour of the night...

    Disgusted

I have to admit that I got sucked into this show during week one. Even though the sparring rules are pretty ridiculous, some of the challenges looked fun and most of the contestants had at least a shred of humbleness.

Week two, however went quickly downhill. Those Red Dragon Karate sisters were awful. I wish they would disqualify people for crying during a sparring match! And, walking into a kick <> excessive contact. The lack of respect and humbleness was especially apparent at the end when they were all lined up to hear their final scores - people standing with hands in their pockets, arms crossed, etc. A very poor reprentation of martial artists, IMO. I hope week three ups the maturity level a bit! (yes, I admit I'll still be watching. . . )

At least I had a good laugh when Brian declared "the Final Fu is like the ultimate martial arts title".

Red Dragon Karate isnt a particular style of MA. Its a large franchise, howeverunlike other franchises like McDonalds Red Dragon dojo's do not follow a specific set of guidelines. Some Red Dragon studio's teach Shotokan, some teach Karate, Kenpo, and they even throw in Judo and alot of weapons training. It tends to attract extremely young children, its like little league MA.

On another note, I think the show would be interesting if it allowed a MT stylist on. After going to the website, my beleif in belts has been severely diminished.

to me its one of those "since there isnt anything else on" type shows. doesnt really show what martial arts is about.however i will be watching it for week 3 and the finals out of curiosity.
