Wouldnt it be awsome if theres such thing as Martial Art College. Like a normal college but focus only on martial art, with various styles and masters instructing in different class room just like a real college. If I win the lottery I will build a school like that. Lol anyone else? 1st period Taekwondo, 2nd period Tai chi, 3rd period acrobatic, 4th period judo, 5th period human anatomy and pressure point. Haha :D wouldnt that be awsome? It'll be like world head quater of martial art. Just hope I'm not too old to study when a school like that is build.

It would actually be pretty cool, but they would first need to get rid of the mentality in the styles that your own style is the best and all others suck, or you'd have non-stop kung fu fighting challenge matches on campus. I'd definetely enroll.

There are already modified places like this. Each year there are at least two groups that organize almost a weeks worth of training. Napma holds an annual conference, where you learn among other things about marketing and teaching your martial art. The Karate College is an other. Each year Joe Lewis, Jerry Beasley and Bill Wallace get together with about 40-50 other internationally known instructors and teach you different aspects of their arts. Many times there are special programs for different aspects of teaching too.

There are also colleges that offer martial arts lines in Korea and a few other countries as well.

If you are really interested in it, check it out on the web.

Yeah I know but those are kinda seminar and held only a short period of time. Bill Wallance, Joe Lewis all those guys got similar experience. I wouldnt really care if they gather and teach:rolleyes: . Yeah I know Kukiwon is kinda like that. Is basically a taekwondo college, but so far there isnt a mix martial art college out yet. I mean a real college, not mix martial art school. Like with all styles to select from. You can graduate and get like a degree in martial art wether than styles. Wouldnt that be awsome. haha

    'Twould be an awesome college.

I guess it's possible to do a sports science degree and focus on MA. But then you'd be researching rather than being taught. At least that way you get to know the sports anatomy and maybe then blaze a trail...

Black Belt Magazine did an article on Martial Arts on Campus .... seems Radford University in Virginia has the U.S.'s only legitimate martial arts curriculum.

...there are plenty of home study "martial arts science" programs you can get online such as American College of Martial Science

A martial arts college would be awesome! Might even make me want to go back to college again (and I've already been three times!) By the way, you're never too old.

Kind of already happening, my old university (Canterbury Christ Church Uni College) runs a Sports Science degree where Martial Arts is on the agenda, not only do you learn the psycology and injury side of things but you are also taught the practical aspects (training etc) and the philosphical and historical side if you are doing a MA like, Kung Fu. Karate etc, etc. Not just about the training aspect but also about the lifestyle that goes with it.

pretty cool course by all accounts friend of mine from Uni did his specialism in the skateboard industry and the treatment of skateboard injurys and now works in the US for Element....me., did a history degree, have a post grad qualification in Journalism...out of work!!

yes, in fact it is one of my goals in life to bring this to the university level...

i think it should encompass all things from healing, external, internal arts, philosphy, and science

    science being anatomy and phsyiology

    or some chinese medice acupuncture/pressure

i think like a student taking basketball the student enrolled in MA should have to practice 3 hours a day. College is the perfect place for this :)

    this would truly be awesome,
    joe

maybe it could be approached sortof like Culinary Arts. There are lots of good schools for that, they teach not only the art and science of cuisine but also business.

    Hi,

I believe there were plans for a martial arts "University" in the UK. I remember reading an advertising feature where instructors were asked to contact "?" about places on the staf teaching thier m.a. specialism. The cost was high (i.e. you got to pay for the privelege of being a tutor!), and I haven't heard anything about it since.

    Anyone got more info?

Wouldn't it be better to just go to a real school and get a real job? I mean, are you really gonna be an instructor in 25 martial arts and martial arts theory. Wait, I guess you could. Sounds cooler than a desk job

It'd be impractical to have a college based solely around martial arts training and philosphy/history. Sure, you'd get a degree, but what sort of careers are there for that degree except ma instructor? Not saying it's a bad profession, but it hardly justifies the tens of thousands of dollars tuition would probably cost in order to get a degree with only one or two career options.

It'd be much better just to find a college with a good sports science/kinesiology department or something, and focus on martial arts or train as an elective.

EDIT: While it WOULD be impractical to have a ma college, I'd still join if there was one :D

Either that or take a completely unrelated degree/job/whatever and train in martial arts as an aside until you're good enough to teach it anyway. May as well keep the options open.

In Japan there are a number of Shorinji Kempo Schools. They study a normal curriculum plus Shorinji Kempo. No other arts are studied though, but then I don’t think there would be a great need too, many of the teachers hold yudansha ranks in other arts. On my first trip to Japan I was invited to visit a Shorinji Kempo High School in Kyoto, one of teachers there held 20 dan rankings in different martial arts, he had studied them before experiencing Shorinji Kempo.

If you’re interested I have placed link here to one of the schools, this school is at our Hombu and the headmaster is Yamasaki sensei, he used to be one of the two head instructors at Hombu.
