Lightning Scientific Arnis is a Filipino Martial Art (FMA) from the Island of Panay founded by the late Grandmaster Benjamin Luna Lema in 1937. It was a synthesis of the different techniques informally practiced throughout the Island and incorporates the techniques of Tercia, Serrada, Cadenilla and espada y daga with the use of: single stick, double stick, stick/sword and dagger, knives, empty hand etc… This is an “espada y daga serrada” system (from Spanish- sword/stick and dagger) it’s main principle is fighting out of the opponent’s line of sight (Serrada) and focuses on the power generation and speed of the weapon.

Master Jon Escudero will be coming over the US this fall 2010, to conduct Seminars in Seattle, Los Angeles and Rochester. The seminar will be of Lightning Scientific Arnis fighting concepts in bolo work, baston serrada, knife and hand to hand applications.

It looks impressive but what's pratical about it? Shall aI go out and buy a stick to defend myself? I just don't get the whole stick fighting thing? It's similar to when we do bo/jo/nunchuck katas/drills in jujitsu: when am I ever going to have one to hand?

Oh dear, where does one start.

Eskrima although a bladed system also has a complete empty hands system. In addition the joy of Eskrima is that all of the skills are transferable, that is to say the lines of attack unlike Kung Fu are the same whether using the stick, blade or empty hands.

My empty hands skills have improved since I started Eskrima. Once understood drills like Tapi Tapi are of great help.

Scientific Arnis is not me style so I cannot shed any light on the name, but it is a respected system. We do have instructors in this country. Glen Lobo springs to mind.

I don't get the more specialized weaponry. But when you think about them as basic classes of weaponry, and the eskrima arsenal as approximate simulations of each, it starts to make more practical sense. The tactics for contending with a knife mirror those for contending with a broken bottle, box cutter, or... knife.

The stick is a one-handed impact weapon. And the tactics for using (and defending against) it mirror those for contending with an unbroken bottle, half a pool queue, a lead pipe, etc.

And that's just if you strip eskrima out of its cultural context (a culture in which the likelihood of fighting with these things is considerably higher than it might be in the suburbs of Washington DC for instance). That's its value to someone whose sole priority it is to train for practical use in their lives.

to understand the name, we must try to understand what GM Lema wanted to say and how he chose to express it at the time the name was coined in 1937. we have to remember that though the meaning of the word hasnt chained, how we understand it may be a bit different now.

Mang Ben used the word "scientific" to express the principle that the techniques/methods of the style have been vetted and proven through the scientific method of evaluation ( observing, creating a hypothesis, testing and coming to a conclusion).

In my generation now, we understand it to mean that it is a "style" that has a good understanding of anatomy, bio-mechanics, physiology, psychology and tactics, and other "ologies" out there. and that these knowledges are applied in the usage and methodologies in teaching it.
