[Korea] Yellow Fever?

So as not to further derail the original thread and because I wanted to respond to Naughty Knight's and Sgt. Majors comments I thought I'd make a new thread. I don't anticipate a particularly long and drawn out discussion on this because I doubt anyone is likely to change their views but still...

I agree that's not. Stating for instance that you like Irish women wouldn't be racist so I don't see why stating you like Korean women should be. Even extending this to 'Asian' I still think it's a fairly harmless thing to say. We all have prefences afterall and so what if you find people from a particular ethnic background attractive that's your business. You could argue, if you felt so inclined, that someone for whom 'race' was an important factor was perhaps a bit shallow but I personally don't care if someone else wants to be shallow- it's there life.

The bit that madmonk and others including myself tend to find a bit racist or is the bit where you said:

Your right it is a novelty to a Korean when a non-Korean speaks Korean but I can guarantee you that it is more of a novelty with a white person than a non-white. You seem to be making this very point as well so I'm not sure why your arguing with it. I know Asian people that speak other Asian languages and they generally aren't afforded as much interest because it isn't as unusual.

As for speaking very good Korean... I'll take your word for it. If your 'fluent' after a year of not even properly learning then you must be pretty damn good or else you have an exaggerated view of your ability.

As for insinuating that being White gives you some sort of advantage... your the one who brought that up! lol... you were the one pointing out that your unusual because your WHITE and you speak an Asian language. Your not being racist by pointing that out because it's true. That's not what people are taking issue with. It's your sugestion that because you are white and speak an Asian language every pretty Asian girl is immediately at your beck and call.

The thing is as unusual as speaking an Asian language may be in the wider world I attend a university that specialises in Asian languages so practically everyone I know can speak one or usually two or more Asian languages. I also know a pretty large and varied group of Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Korean etc. etc. people because of this. And universally they and all language students are well aware of the people who use speaking a language as a way to pick up girls and tend to bracket them into a certain category which isn't as far removed from the middle aged sex tourists you mention. It's also fair to say a large amount of language students fall into this group and this includes some people who I count as good friends. I don't really like their attitude towards Asian women nor do most of the Asian women who I speak to but that doesn't make them horrible people.

So your certainly not alone nor is it really something I give a flying crap about. It's your insinuation that purely speaking a language gives a white person immediate access to Asians thats distasteful. You can dress it up as much as you like but thats what your post came across as.

Well for a start I'm not sure I completely agree with madmonk's opinion on the role of colonialism but that aside I said "the legacy of colonialism" which I would suspect the Asian admiration for Western culture might be related to.

As I say attending a university full of people who are fascinated by Asian culture I don't know of anyone besides people interested in bedding women who would say they have 'Yellow fever'. As for your friend naming his film company after it, good for him, it has no bearing on anything except for the fact that your friend doesn't mind the term... neither apparently does Naughty Knight so it's not like everyone agrees on this.

Also, as for being threatened what threat does Naughty Knight possibly pose? He's a guy from Australia with a self admitted Asian fetish and an apparently exaggerated sense of uniqueness because he speaks a bit of an Asian language. It's really not a threat to my way of life. I also don't think jealousy is an overriding concern for the individuals who are disagreeing with NK. I don't care what kind of girl NK goes out with... good for him she's hot... has no effect on me. What I and others are taking issue with is the silly comments about Asian girls being easy if you speak an Asian language.

 

I've never heard of yellow fever used to describe anything other than interest in asian members of the opposite sex.

As far as weather or not it's racist to prefer women of a certain nationality, that depends on why you prefer them. If you prefer say Asians because you don't like black or Spanish women or because of some racial stereotype about them that's racist but if you prefer them because you like the dark silky hair and dark eyes and other typical Asian features then that's not racist, that's just taste. It's no different than a guy who prefers big breast or big butts or long legs or guys who only like blondes etc. You can't change what you're attracted to.

A few things:

Racism is acting on stereotypes given to a particular race. (I took a course in college on Racism in Education so, first thing to do is to define what racism is)

Yellow Fever = "Jungle Fever" (as promoted by the Spike Lee Film). Mixed race couples of African decent and Caucasins.

Yellow is a derogatory term used to describe Asians. Particularly used by Americans refering to Japanese people.

Now, was NK being racist? Not from what little I see in the post. Was he being a bit of a bragert w/ racial undertones. Yes. But isn't that his way? In what is posted I did not read anything that smacked of racism...

Gotta agree with Narc (and Sarge on the original thread). Calling something like that racist is just taking political correctness too far.

 

Without trying to question the moderation (which is excellent at MAP), wouldn't it make more sense to split the off-topic material from the thread instead of closing a thread for speaking Korean because topic drift caused by about the only person who hasn't used any Korean at all on the thread?

Now with this thread open, why not split the off-topic material to this one?

 

Although I haven't read the original thread or this thread or anything else on the internet ever, isn't this just a thread about NaughtyKnight going "I'm a pimp" - I think all the socio-linguistic commentary is a little wasted.

narcsarge and Moosey I agree with both of you. I think MadMonk overreacted a bit and I also think it's a bit of a hoo-haa over someone just trying to point out how 'pimp' they are. That said having to listen to this kind of stuff for years it does grind on you a bit... as does being told to 'get over yourself' because you disagree with someone!

 

Since I haven't quite found the Korean to say it in the language... My husband would be quite surprised to hear that there are no women on MAP. As would Lou, Lily, Carys, Cait, and the rest of us women.

My husband will probably laugh at the thought that I am supposedly jealous some guy who hasn't impressed me has an Asian girlfriend.

Christ. What a long winded post. I'm not going to bother rebuting every single point you made, I'll just rebut the overal point you are trying to make.

Firstly, anyone thinking I was being racist, take a few deep breaths and get over it. I'm incredibly rude, unPC and I don't proof read my replies to make sure its not going to offend anyone. I wasn't being racist, thats all thats going to be said. I was merly making a crude statement.

LOL! Who learns a language purely to pick up girls? That is the biggest waste of time there is. If you smile at a girl and wave her over, she'll come over and speak English to you, even if its a bit broken. Even if you do go over and say something in Korean, or any language for that matter, they'll usually just start speaking English anyway. Most girls that speak to me do so so they can practise their English. Out of 50 girls I speak to, I might date 2 max. As i've said before, I enjoy the entire Asian culture, not just screwing Asian girls. I learn Korean so I can watch Korean dramas mostly. Hilarious stuff.

For anyone feeling "intimidated" by me. ROFL! Thanks for the massive complement. Next time I bed an Asian women, its for all you guys on here.

I always find the posts saying 'you guys are wasting your time talking about this, here's my opinion now stop talking' to be a bit grating. If you don't care then the more productive option would be to not post on the topic rather than revive a thread that had died 2 weeks ago to state how much you don't care.

As to your points... people do learn languages in large part to pick up girls, it happens all the time, if you went to a language school you might be suprised at the amount of people that do this. Wonderful to hear you don't do it. I couldn't give a flying monkey's uncle one way or the other.

As for the intimidation... that was sarge saying that- so it's him you should be thanking, no-one else. He was insinuating anyone disagreeing with you must be intimated by your incredible success with women. You'll find that everyone disagreeing with you found this ridiculous. From the sounds of it you find it ridiculous too... glad we agree!

As for the thinking your 'special and unique' for speaking an Asian language that's the impression I got from reading your posts. Maybe I was mistaking divine arrogance though... it is possible I guess.

Anyway, as I said in the first post here, I don't expect your going to change your mind on anything nor do I care (I assume such lack of caring is mutual). I just didn't agree with sarge or your final posts and didn't want to derail the other thread. I also agree with moosey and narcsarge that it is a bit of a storm in a teacup.

Still I have no interest in this discussion beyond what's already been said so maybe the thread could die it's death? Or do you want to make another few posts saying how much you don't care about this complete with rebuttals?

Unfortunatly, I dont really have all that time to come on here and post my usual amount anymore. I'm a corporate puppet at the beck and call of my boss. When I do have time, I will pop in and inject my usual chaos, but it may leave the thread languishing for a week or two.
