    Hi All,

About 7 years ago i injured my knee playing rubgy (my foot stuck in the grass and my knee went the other way- painful)
I was told i had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament. The hospital saidto do physio, which i did. However all this time later i am still plagued by my knee buckling constantly (i've had to stop kicking in kickboxing!!!) and the inability to walk for around a week after.im currently spending a few months in australia and I was sat on the couch a week ago and turned my knee about an inch and that was it gone again.i was unable to walk for about 4 days.

My question, has anybody else done a similar injury?and how did they're progression go. I have been back and forward to my doctor over the years and he just keeps saying - physio. Im seriously thinking of pushing for an operation, at least to see whats going on in there - as i know its not right!

    Cheers

If you ruptured your acl, there's no way a doctor would recommend anything other than surgery, particularly if you're going to be active on it. Physical therapy will not heal an injury like that (I know, I've had it). I think you should get a second opinion because if you really do have an acl tear, you shouldn't be able to walk.

If your doctor has said, " You've torn your acl" and do to physio....that's just plain stupidity on the doctors part. (sorry but it is!)

If your acl is torn and you want to stop feeling that buckle, you need to see an orthopedic surgeon immediately and have them take a look at it.

A torn ACL will not repair itself with just rest and rehab.

I tore my ACL and went to the physio...i tore it 4 more times..eventually i went to an orthopedic surgeon, who operated, and after 9 mnths or rehab my knee was better than my un-operated leg.

I just wished I went to the specialist in the 1st place!!

From what you've described, if your hearing that clunk, feeling that buckle, and are down in pain, I'd be very suprised if it wasn't torn.

It depends on the level of tear in the ligament. Mine tore sliced abit of cartalidge and stuck itself in the knee joint so i had no movement, but the only surgury i had was to trim way the torn ligament.

Now to get on some dicey medical grounds.

Whilst your ligament won't heal, it might partially re-attach. Mine did this, after my second tear, had an arthroscopy to confirm. Anyway, what this means for me is that my ligament is now lax. I have the same chance, nearly, of tearing it as a healthy knee, but it will strain more easily.

If this is the case for you then see a sports physio. Mine has given me exercises for static and rotational stability of the knee, which have improved my ability significantly. It's due to needing to work minor muscle groups that squat exercises often miss. Also, a profilactic knee support might help as well.

If you don't want to listen to ny of the above advice, as i will probably be out gunned by the number of people telling you to go for surgury then you should.

    a) get a letter off your instructor saying how good you were before the injury and how its affected your training. If he can make out (lie) that you wer about semi pro all the better

    b) Arrange an appointment with your specialist to get your self back on the list for knee surgury, he's the only one who can put you there

    c) SEE you sport physio, and get a letter about how physio won't help you get him/her to write off to the specialist

    d) Go to your GP armed with both letters and nag him bout ow important this is.

Keep repeating c and d, they will get you moved up the waiting list alot faster. When i needed to have my cartalidge trimmed tis knocked about 6 months of my waiting list. (For my instructor i had the uni football team coach write off)
