"Budo Karate Do" A documentary on Choki Motobu and his style, complete with bunkai. Unforutnately it looks like they skipped over some sections when converting to Youtube. Also some not-nice things are said of Funakoshi, but those who know me know I didn't post this to offend anyone. Classic 1980s Video Footage It has come to my attention that the English Shotokan Karate Association's 1980s Colour Karate Video tapes have now been uploaded onto U tube. These had a copyright date of 1983, featured two of the associations senior grades Michael Randall (then 5th Dan, now 8th Dan) and Roger Hall (then 4th Dan, now 7th Dan). They were produced in Betamax format and were probably the first commercial Shotokan Karate videos made in the UK. Neither instructor is still with ESKA. Classic 1980s Shotokan. Here's a nice long highlight video from the 2008 Sabaki Challenge in Denver, Colorado, USA, an Enshin (knockdown karate) tournament. Growing up in Boulder (an hour from Denver), I used to always see ads on TV for the Sabaki Challenge each year. Colorado has a really substantial knockdown karate population, and I never really appreciated how rare that was until I left the state. Now I'm at a point in my life where I would really enjoy training in Kyokushin or Enshin, but there's no knockdown dojos within five hours of me... Anyway, enjoy: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6c_nz-VLCKw"]YouTube - 2008 World Sabaki Challenge[/ame]
Here's a couple of videos I took earlier this year at the Koryu 2009 demo here in Finland (Seibukan was the only karate style there) [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vAnhxndLLw]Part 1[/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKBo5wcAzwo]Part 2[/ame]
They are, therefore the whole koryu/gendai is, IMHO, not even relevant in karate context. Ok, Shorin ryu is an old style, with history going probably to before the abolishment of samurai class, but it is not documented and it probabky didn't look like it looks now, so therefore I always stop the family tree around the time of Matsumura Sokon. Anything before him is guessing. For whatever reason, the organizers of the Koryu 2009 show wanted us to participate. There was also one ryukyu kobudo style present, all the others were from mainland Japan.
TimoS, that second video was beautiful. it's been quite a while since i saw a demo like that. i applaud your dojo.
Thanks, but there's only one guy from the same dojo I train in. All the rest are from around Finland.
Depends on your flavor of karate. Shori Te, Naha Te, and Tomari Te arts date back several hundred years (Although the modern names do not...)
Stumbled upon this today. For all the poop that the WKF gets, I was very impressed by both the talent and intensity of the karateka: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bOHbkBfjas&feature=related"]YouTube - WKF Karate HUSEYNOV and AGHAYEV 2008 FINALS[/ame]

Wow, that's the first time I've ever seen anyone use morote gari in a karate match. He did get a bit carried away and try to do it over and over again, but fair play to the dude for going for it - I raise my hat to him!
If my opponent was baffled by how to defend one particular technique I had, I might do it again and again and again too
