it evolved out of this, which was afaik harder:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pta_JA_x0_4"]Yahara v Imamura - YouTube[/ame] (i think you can actually hear the first punch making contact :p)

and when done properly violently nowadays, looks like this:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53gO_2sBfc4&feature=related"]KARATE SHOTOKAN JKA Kumite - YouTube[/ame]

afaik it basically evolved because early karateka in japan were getting bored of endless kata and basics, and pretty much wanted to beat the crap out of each other, young male university students that they were, and since a lot of early japanese karate clubs were university-based, they started organizing big competitions like the JKA's all-japan tournament. cue endless permutations and after a few decades we end up with modern sport kumite :(.

I like that vid (the second one) basically I guess because it's almost all scoring ippon. Seems to me that the format would be better if they only scored ippon and getting the clean strike in would count for nothing if it didn't drop your opponant... but then I guess that's more of a knockdown formula.

    Cheers for the input guys.

Actually, I agree with you there. I started a thread years ago suggesting that the competition format would work better if they didn't score waza-ari and only stopped the match when ippon was scored.

But I disagree with you to an extent on this.

They pull the strikes - that's the rule set. You make contact but you pull before the strike really penetrates.
I don't think so, I think they're just considering the fact that they're unlikely to win through a scrappy slap-fest so they're trying to regain some distance and regroup.
Sorry to hear you don't like the aesthetics.

There's a bit of both. It is, in theory, an effective way to spar as it encourages people to fight as if they weren't invincible. A solid punch in the face that cracks an orbit or cheekbone isn't something you'll shrug off in real life. Fighting as if you could be taken out at any time is a pretty survival-friendly behaviour and I think that shobu ippon kumite encourages that.

I reckon there's maybe an extent to which you see it when you know what you're looking for. I'd imagine you're a judo fan? You must admit that when you watch olympic judo and it's just 2 minutes of guys slapping each other's fingers and competing for a dominant grip it looks rubbish. As you commented above, it's just the ippons that look cool. Those guys are doing the same thing - they're trying to find the dominant angle, position of entry, distance, timing to land a blow that would end the fight. And if you do land that technique, there is no point continuing the fight - otherwise you're just playing superhero fighting.

The whole point is that it's a compromise between fighting completely bare knuckled and not mashing people's faces.

    Thanks for the reply.

I think perhaps it would look like less of a scrappy slap fest if they were more capable in that situation/range? A lot of the time someone wades in to score it goes **** up and then they end up flapping about in a fool clinch or just gunning deperately to make sufficient contact to score a point. It shows that they are at least uncomfortable with being rushed and dealing with infighting.

I'd argue that it actually encourages a false sense of the impact one strike will have on the human body.
People who fight in full contact MA in the european kickboxing/Thai/Savate/Boxing etc sense of the term do not think they are invinsible and do not fight as such... they have an acute idea of how much punishment they can take or give and they understand that just because they land a clean hit that doesn't necessarily mean it's game over and doesn't mean they wont catch some serious return fire.

I think it appears to encourage diving in with no concern fo rbeing countered as long as you hit first too. Which is a terrible habit especially considering the fact that half those strikes wouldn't end the confronation... much like the issue you raised with the video of the bunkai from Bassai Dai on the other thread.

It's not that the ippons look cool or indeed about what does or does not look cool for me. It's that you can see the technique actually functioning. I don't think they should score points for technique that essentially havent worked. In judo a throw is a throw. The technique worked, it had a visible effect on the opponant. In the footage you showed that wasn't the case. Also I don't think that pulling punches is a great idea for a full contact format. You shouldn't imo be trying to...

FC is supposed to remove the need for this unwarranted level of speculation. Either the technique does it's job or it doesn't. It either ends it or it doesn't.

Superhero fighting to me is treating the shot you just landed as if it would have sparked or incapacitated your opponant on faith/supposition when they are stood in front of you in a position to counter your ass... that's ironic to me, and it ultimately sums up my problem with the format.

Face damage can be mitigated against by face guards if you dont want gloves but realistically how frequent are those injuries in sports that allow fullcontact striking to the face with gloves? And a glove is actually going to allow you to punch harder. So would you even need them?

And regarding on shot one kill... that seems far more applicable to sword work than to empty hand and I believe that might actually be where that idiom was originally intended to be used.

    Has anyone posted this yet?

Firstly, at 1.40 the dudes are rope climbing in waterfalls, which rocks so hard as to be incontravertably cool, secondly at 2.40 there is an all kind of crazy cool knockout with kicking someone you've just swept.

Whilst you moisturise we'll climb ropes in waterfalls goddammit!

Actually I love BJJ, but a mate of mine who only trains once a week has just got a nasty skin infection on his face! I'm sure his gym keep the mats clean (it's a Gracie gym), I think it's just an occupational hazzard same as broken fingers in judo or toes in TKD.
