That's a pretty cool warm up, but do you not find your hamstrings grumble if you don't stretch them by themselves?

But hamstrings are getting some static and dynamic stretch (though admittedly not as much as a dedicated Stretch workout would give them). From just a standing forward bend to touch the floor, the top held ^ part of a hindu pushup; to forward lunges and squat walks. The parts that need a lot more (as technique breakdown hints) is thoracic spine, achilles and calf, since all of these contribute or rather will hold back good posture while doing a deep Squat whether front or back. Hence why I've taken my Squat back from sub 90kg to sub 70kg to work through the positions with hopefully a stronger base in future.

I would like to fit in more yoga though. I was watching some BJJ black belt the other day who said something along the lines of it was the most only cross training he felt was necessary

Fair enough. I always find the hamstrings need a little extra stretching by themselves to stop them being likely to grumble, but since a lot of my training involves kicking movements that probably would explain why.

Yoga is superb for suppleness and what-not. Occasionally I try and squeeze in some yoga style stretches and it does me a world of good.

Have you started going back to judo yet?

    My Stretching Workout

    Warmup

    Skipping for 5 mins

    Single leg Deadlift (L/R)
    3 x 8 @ 35kg

    Front Lunges
    4 x 15 @ 20kg

Isometric Stretch for Front Split (L/R)
Mostly on instep back foot; then some hip flexor stretches, back to the instep back foot; finished with some side back foot, around 15 mins.

    Passive Stretch for Side Split
Feet starting against wall in Squat position, then extended to hold for about 5 mins

I forgot the foam rolling at the start, and though not as sweaty hot it felt okay for the stretching so just went with this. Had enough time for relaxing shower and wash my hair properly for a change.

I remember the Olympics for an Uchi Mata that Joo did in the semis even though she could barely walk on the mat, unsurprisingly she lost to the world champion in the Bronze medal -78kg semis. Would have to trawl through a 3 hour olympic quarters to find it though alas.

Tried out a slightly different format today, but I found it difficult to fit everything in...

    Skipping
    Warmup

    Bench Press

    1 x 5 @ 20kg
    1 x 3 @ 32.5kg
    1 x 3 @ 40kg
    5 x 5 @ 44kg

    Pendlay Rows
    5 x 8 @ 50kg superset with gripper in rest period...

    Gripper
    4 x 5 L/R @ 100lbs

    Back Squat
    1 x 1 @ 30kg (paused)
    1 x 2 @ 40kg (paused)
    1 x 3 @ 50kg (paused)
    1 x 3 @ 60kg
    5 x 5 @ 67.5kg atg PR

    TKEs
    3 x 15 L/R superset with paused reps

I thought about supersetting the gripper with Bench Press but was concerned I might tire out when I was really focussed on getting some consistency on these reps. I should be okay to go up to 44.5kg. I had to skip a couple of items from my warmup so was pleased this didn't affect BP.

I was a bit rushed to get Squats in, the first couple of paused reps felt awful and I did consider dropping this for some more DB Incline Bench, stretching between sets with the band work did work though, and a few more reps, well 9 warmup reps, starting heavier, this was just the right choice, for I started my 1st set of 5 at 9.38pm (considering they call time at 9.45pm there wasn't much time for getting fussy on bar position). I was pleased with keeping form under time pressure. It's better than the pressure of someone who wants to get me off.

Would have liked to get some DB work for bis and tris, guess I'll need to add this to my post Deadlift supplementary list., and handstands, and planks, and....:Angel:

I've seen guys literally hovering 10 feet from the rack just waiting for the set to end before going into a 'how many more sets have you got?' can I come in on this? how long are you going to be? etc, there's definately nothing kinky going on, I'm the last person to be sociable while at the gym. I saw this girl yesterday who does nothing but yoga, and this guy was interrupting her several times. I think she let him and some people don't like to be blunt with saying 'I'm here to do a workout, not talk about it' My other pet hate is guys who train with their girlfriends ;)

i train with my gf. she would only do cardio otherwise...

although it must be annoying that we take up two racks with endless squats

Nice, all full closes? Any static holds going on in your gripper? Although, if you fry your grip too much early on it's (obviously) not always the cleverest thing...

    WooT! :woo:

I have a sort of long story about this. I started with Starting Strength at my last gym, mostly 90%+ training on my own. Occasionally the gym manager would come in on my workout but helped in some ways as form check, spotting; though later I found this quite distracting as he will interact with most people there and take calls on his phone, while I would time my rest between sets, something that just isn't possible when people interrupt with conversations.

At the last gym he did some training with 2 girls, well I say girls they were only 5-10 years younger than me and I'm ancient. Both got into lifting, one a bit more seriously than the other. While training together with the gym manager I would estimate about half the session was conversation. I even have some of this on video, doing a 1km rowing warmup, with them doing well nothing, in the background:rolleyes:

So they split up, one training quite seriously with another of the gym regulars who competes. This did pay off with her getting a stronger Bench than me, though I still could Deadlift a bit more so it was evens on Squat. I only found out much later, after she stopped turning up, a couple of months before the gym shut down why. There was more than training going on, and he was married with kids!

The other one was always flirting with the fighters, it was pretty obvious she was at the gym to socialise not train, and her lifting was at best only 40% of myself and the other girl. She was still training though, with someone, maybe not seriously just to socialise, and got married a month ago. Someone she met a few months ago, possibly at another gym!

There was no way if I was to buddy up I'd get any serious strength training done. I do wonder how gyms like Supertraining and Elite workout. I guess with really heavy weight you cannot take that lightly. Working in a group of 3-4 does work out a lot better. There is usually enough rest period so timing it is unnecessary, plenty of spotters, people to give advice on form, the risk that a chatty person is going to spoil the environment.

So going back to couples working out, I've never seen this with anything but Squat (no bench or deadlift ever), and can only think of one pair that had good form and were training seriously. It's usually perfectly, out of catalogue model not a drop of sweat on anyone. The same when two girls come in and do a high rep sets with next to no weight. I know it is tough training on your own, you get no respect from guys, cannot come in on sets with guys on the power rack or bench (more often than not), but if more of them did it there might be more sharing and proper training. Oh there might be more chat too though:cry: Guess thats why some gyms have a women only area

I have to say that as tempted as I am to join a gym to get better access to weights and maybe a power rack all this nonsense you say is going on REALLY puts me off.
I'd rather stay in my cold and lonely garage than have to put up with that stuff.

Nearly all. The left probably needs all the work, if I place it higher in my hand that I can only just get the ends on my fingers on I have the leverage in my hand to close it fully, otherwise I get stuck a few millimetres short. I guess I have more strength and flexibility in my right hand as I get it closed every time. I was really squeezing it with the left for a few more seconds each time, but just speed close on the right. Getting the next weight up would give my right hand something to think about:eek:

I think it depends where you train, I've had next to none of the hassle I hear people talk about, I've never once seen anyone curl in a squat rack during gym hours either :) even when training in a 24hour 'fitness' centre the worst I deal with is people benching in the rack for a while or asking 'what muscle does that work' when I'm doing cleans or something.

Apart from my previous example I haven't seen any guys being interrupted in their workouts by girls (so you might be okay). I've had this happen several times under the guise of asking me what I'm training or some compliment about my determined training. Really, yes, I'm Rachel from 'Enter The Dojo':p

Aye, I had a gym membership until a couple of months before I started my log. I always getting frustrated with other people when I'm in the gym. I'm normally pretty fast and efficient between machines, weights and such and like to crack on hard and fast. I'm the kind of guy that will row 1k in 1m 42s, cycle 4k uphill in 10 minutes (etc) and need very little time to catch my breath between machines.

So it used to wind me up no end with dudes/gals who thought they wanted to train would hog an area of the machines barely putting any effort into their training, so I would be waiting, having to fill my time with exercises I had already done just to wait for them to finish up. Then I got fed up with the people who sat there after using a machine or a weights bench just lying on it for a few minutes before moving on. Seriously, if you're not going to use it again get your lazy backside off the bench and go sit on a chair!!!

Then they would never wipe down the equipment they'd used if they were really sweaty. I have no issues with people being sweaty, I have issues with people who don't have the courtesy to mop their sweat off the seats and such.

Then there were all the guys who would never reset the machines and such after they had used them. Seriously, I might be able to shift 152.5kg of the hip abduction machines and make it look easy, but you also get a lot of smaller, more delicate people who aren't very strong using those machines and its' not fair on them. :bang:

Then you get the narcissists who keep checking themselves out in the mirror while they train and make a huge fuss over the muscle they think they're building, flexing their biceps, etc. Seeing a dude do it with 12kg DB's after nearly killing himself with them was my favourite.

Then you get the ones who stand round on a machine just chatting. Again, if you're not using it, clear off!

So for those reasons, I cancelled my gym membership and once in a blue moon go swimming or go for a generic cardio session in the gym. That and I nearly broke an elliptical machine once :D. But I know I'm much happier by myself with a mirror. At least I can crack on at a speed I want to, even if I don't lift the heaviest weights around.

There were two guys at my old gym that just used to seemingly throw their dumbells across the gym at the end of a set. Knobs.

I guess we all have different things that annoy us in the gym. The only machine I've ever had to wait to get on was one of the Cable crossovers. Sweat isn't high on the list, I use chalk but quite conservatively (I think there might be a rule against it but no one has stopped me yet).

Guys who train for bodybuilding don't bother me. I usually check my back and shoulder position before Rows and Deadlifts. I do get fed up with unloading 120kg from the Bench when I want to do some warmup reps. It's always the guys who leave the Bench loaded. Apart from the laziness, it isn't obvious if that person has just gone to look for a 2.5kg plate or drink of water or finished

Wait, people do that for real?!

    ....why?!

Also, can anyone explain why I always see dudes throwing their barbells down after using them? You know, like they do a set of strict OHP's or something, then just toss them on the floor?
