Happy St. George's Day everyone! If you live in England, be proud to live in the greatest country on Earth If you don't, be proud England probably owned your country at some point :woo: Will anyone be doing anything special today? (Apart from Ero-Sennin, who will probably be leading guerilla warfare against his local British embassy )
Happy St George's day to you too! I'll be doing sword and shield at kali tonight if that counts as themed?
According to an item on Radio 5 today, only about 36% of people in England knew that it was St George's Day. Which is why I find it rather strange when people moan that the day gets overlooked! If people really are bothered about marking the day, then how do you think we should do so? With a big booze-up, or something a bit more 'cultural'?
Both...Get drunk, beat someone up who supports a different football team, then invade some unknown country. Then celebrate the glorious victory with a Carry On marathon!
I think I will eat some Hummus in honor of the Arabic patron saint of England...possibly a lamb curry too
I had no idea. But then a Saint from a religion that means nowt to me and overt national pride when I've not achieved much myself aren't really my thing. Now Darwin day I can get behind.
How serious is St. George's Day before we start trying to +1 each other with patriotic pictures of progressing size and badassness?
I think it's a shame nationalists and racists have pretty much hijacked the whole thing. He's not only international, but inter-faith too: "Many Patronages of Saint George exist around the world, including: Georgia, England, Egypt, Bulgaria, Aragon, Catalonia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Macedonia, Ukraine, Russia and Syria, as well as the cities of Genoa, Amersfoort, Beirut, Botoşani, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Timişoara, Fakiha, Bteghrine, Cáceres, Ferrara, Freiburg im Breisgau, Kragujevac, Kumanovo, Ljubljana, Pérouges, Pomorie, Preston, Qormi, Rio de Janeiro, Lydda, Lviv, Barcelona, Moscow and Victoria, as well as of the Scout Movement[4] and a wide range of professions, organizations and disease sufferers." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_George http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-27048219
In areas of low income and poor education, it's a pretty big deal. Though most probably have no idea of the actual myths of St. George. Elsewhere... not so much (unless sport is involved, but that tends to turn people into bloodthirsty sectarians anyway).
Patron saint days should be bank holidays in their respective countries. I'm off out with the lads for some drinks, food and possibly a movie after our last training session to celebrate.
