I could of made a thread about bad examples of self defense, but too be honest there are already too many rubbish videos out there and I don't think its worth giving them any attention. Instead why not have a thread dedicated to good examples instead that we can all get something out of? Anyone got any good videos they would like to share and discuss about?
Hapuka, do you mean examples found on youtube or do you mean actual video seen in training courses. For course, JWT, Hannibal, and a few others listed some great resources in previous threads. I like to recommend starting by going back to the old days and watching videos like "Surviving Edged Weapons" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3439314/ not just because of the impact it had on me when I first saw it while in a training course, but also because it gets into first aid and time frames on bleeding out. If you only look at the new stuff, I think you miss out on things because you might not have the background to compare the good and the bad with.
How about this clip? [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnzdQIqY4jU"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnzdQIqY4jU[/ame]
I'm not the most experienced here with takedowns and throws (I only started bjj about a month ago) so I don't have much to say about it. Was there anything you found good about the clip? How could the technique shown here be applied in self defense?
I think if the guy is standing front weighted you're not going to just run him over with a push to the shoulder.
IMO, it's just a simple "push" and "pull". This is the "simplest" take down technique that anybody can learn within 5 minutes. When your opponent is down while you are still standing, you are safe and you can take off. This fit in the "hit and run with mobility" self-defense strategy very well. To "set up" this move properly, you may need to pull first. When you pull, your opponent may resist or yield. If your opponent - resists against you, you can borrow his resistance force and push. - yields into you, you can borrow his yielding force and pull even more.
I thought that was a great takedown technique and video. But a terrible self defence video. In a SD scenario you wouldn't be going in that slow with little to no resistance. Also exposing the top/back of the head like that while going in? What was stopping the opponent from punching, elbowing, kneeing or even jumping on top and crushing his face into the ground? Good wrestling/grappling/technique video. Bad self defence video.
Guy was a southpaw I'm assuming? Fantastic lead hook on the first guy, his footwork was tremendous the pivoting of the lead heal towards the attacker. Fantastic technique under pressure. Good right hook too. His footwork and calm under pressure is admirable, who is the guy?

I could probably find some CCTV of me walking down the street, noticing the belligerent drunk guy up ahead and then crossing the road to avoid him before safely sauntering off on my merry way. Pretty boring to watch though.
Not entirely sure this one comes under self defence. Could also be described as battery and possible robbery.
I can see a case for battery - although he reacted to the apparent initial hostility being displayed by another - but robbery? Not a chance - doesn;t even come close
