I also wondered if anyone could suggest some that won't break the bank. Preferably blue.
I'd like to ask the same question. I have the chance to train occasionally with paralympian Ian Rose and would like to go with a gi. Would a basic one from somewhere like Blitz do the job? I've never owned a gi, so wouldn't know what to look for.
I own the gi in that Amazon link - it's rock solid. Perfect for a training gi - not too heavy, but you're unlikely to rip the sleeve off it either.
Blue gi's are for brown and black belts. I've never seen a beginner wearing one. Your gi will get discoloured. So long as it is clean, no one really cares.
So I'm on the look out for a gi now I'm a judo man. I've got an old blitz one that I got given years ago but it's too small (sleeves too short and doesn't wrap round the middle very well). So the one in this thread is a good practice one? Any other recommendations? Mizuno and Fighting films seem popular but they are obviously aimed at the more serious practitioner.
Blitz are pretty good, be aware they - as most gi's do shrink when you first wash/dry them (so maybe get half size bigger) and also I would wash it a few times (inside out if coloured) before wearing to soften up a bit, as they tend to be pretty stiff when new.
The one in the original post is a very good training gi. More expensive gis are for competition rather than general training.
I still have a judo gi in pristine condition, and it is looking for a new home. It's white, and it does have a club badge sewn in on the chest, but I'm sure it would be easy to cover it with another badge. The size is 6/190, whatever that means.
It means 190cm. 6 foot 2 or thereabouts in old money. I'm interested Johnno but that sounds too big for me (I'm 5 foot 10...and a half!).
Also the weight depends what you are looking for: I know Ounces more than Grams. But as a rule of thumb from my perspective: 8 oz very light, will tear easily 12 oz ok for no grapple arts 14 oz for light grapple arts 16 oz above ok for grappling so 550 grams = 19 Oz so very heavy and a under 30 quid a great price.
That's strange, because I'm 5'11" and it fits me! You're welcome to try it, and if you want it then it's yours.
Maybe you're beefy? I'll PM you mate. Me coming round to your gaff and getting stuff is getting to be a habit!
I've got a Tiger Claw that I picked up in a thrift store that I use for Aikido (and Hapkido stuff when I'm over that way). Quite happy with it (https://www.tigerclaw.com/unbleached-hayashi-single-weave-judo-uniform-martial-arts-pr-5654.html). I've also got one from what used to be a local shop to me (http://www.orientalgateway.us/page26/page21/index.html) that I can't complain a lot about, but I like my Tiger Claw better.
I have been using the one in the original post for the past 10 months, really good club gi just picked another one up, Id suggest picking one up and as for the more serious ones just keep checking ebay for a decent second hand one, they are cheap and you wont be using them much outisde of comps anyway
black eagle just went bankrupt so their judo gear is going to get sold very cheapily indeed over the next few weeks.
