    Hey guys... Right'o then...

Firstly can anyone give me some pointers on sparring with my hands, not bad with leg work but with hand work i really suck, bad thing is that i'm not the tallest of people so therefore shorter arms. I know to focus on getting in close on taller opponents and i generally use quick bursts but not really working for me atm!

and secondly can anyone tell me if there is a way to.... ready for this "make my nose tougher/stronger" because on the slightest knock it bleeds, or any other solution.

    help appreciated... Thanks
    .Phil

well aside from "iron face conditioning" LOL !!! ... why don't you just focus on on effective blocking and keep those hands up & working the footwork (bob & weave)

To improve your "fist boxing" skills, do some work on focus mitts, working jabs, hooks, crosses, upper cuts. At first work on the technique. Perform the techniques slowly, and focus on perfecting them. Then work on delivering power with the strikes. Find combinations of punches that are comfortable for you to work with. For example, a combination i use would be cross-hook-cross. Once you've got some power behind two or three comfortable combinations, start working on speeding the strikes up, so they kinda flow into each with little effort.
Then, work on getting into punching range when your sparring. Kick and block at long range, and work your way into the punching range. Once there, flow into your favoured combinations. :)

Also, make sure you work your combinations on both sides :)

As for the second point... I dunno, it might toughen up after time... I suppose you could get your blood pressure checked. Might be a little on the high side... I don't really know...

Ridgehands and backhands both seem to work well for me when scoring points in sparring.

weird thing... i actually got yelled at for doing that at a tournament. The ref said "You can't get points if there isn't a direct line to the head, so make sure your punches are straight!" when what I was doing was basically running them over with punches and doing the jumping punch thing (it works swimmingly for me, I love that thing ^^), and sometimes i'd substitute the punch for a backfist...
was i actually doing something wrong or what?

oh, and to the initial post- i've got a friend with the same problem, he broke his nose once in gym and now if you even tap it it bleeds rivers (like we were playing ping pong and i smacked him in the nose with the ball... yeah, it was pretty funny, but also really really messy.). He needs to get it re-cauterized (too lazy to spell check that word) and maybe have surgery on it... it sucks. >.<

The only complaint I have ever heard about when doing a backfist or ridgehand is that people don't often retract them properly. In some tournaments, ITF, I have been told that they won't get scored if you don't show proper control, ie rechamber.
