At 0:57 -- "There'll be scary ghost stories" This song is constantly played everywhere in December, everywhere I've ever lived, so I expect/assume everyone knows the song. Well, show of hands, who has a tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas time? (crickets) (crickets) Anyone? Because I have never. I've always ignored that brief line in the song, but this year my daughter asked with a "" face, "Who tells ghost stories? And why would you tell ghost stories at Christmas?!" Ya, why????
There are always ghost stories on the BBC over Christmas, they're one of my favourite bits of Christmas telly. Maybe it's a UK thing?
I think they normally run between Christmas and New Year. In fact, here you go, some from the past https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stories-Christmas-Expanded-6-Disc-Collection/dp/B009XD7M2Y
Yes, Christmas ghost stories are fab. Definitely a great tradition - maybe not such a universal one. But I get really disappointed if the Christmas TV doesn’t include at least one really scary story. Preferably more.
BBC Radio 4 - The Infinite Monkey Cage, The Infinite Monkey Cage Christmas Special I recently listened to this, and enjoyed it very much, Neil DT has an amazing favourite ghost story! "Brian Cox and Robin Ince return for a very special Christmas edition of the show. They are joined on stage by Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, actor and writer Mark Gatiss, cultural anthropologist Deborah Hyde and the Bishop of Leeds. They'll be discussing the joys of the Christmas ghost story, and looking at the Victorian obsession with the supernatural. They'll be asking when studying paranormal phenomenon went from a genuine scientific endeavour, to the realms of pseudoscience."
Just found it on vimeo and I suddenly remembered most of it. And now its 2240hrs and I need to sleep but I can't. Because the pipes are rattling. why I do this????? why?!!
Obviously a UK thing. Good to know. But -- but -- but -- why at Christmas??????? That so does not fit!
Ghostwatch was a Halloween thing.... But the period upto Christmas has a similar vibe... Its all a pagan festival anyway..... Have you ever heard of krampus?
